Science Education Night

Many of you have contacted us expressing an interest in science education, STEM, and K-12 outreach.

Education is a big part of our mission, but we need someone who is really willing and able to step up and take the lead in establishing curriculum and operations for education programs.  There are many potential partners in Carlsbad and the greater San Diego region and we've already had initial talks with Mira Costa and Cal State San Marcus.

The sad fact is that education is extremely underfunded (un funded) and science educators work heroically with little to no resources.  Furthermore, competition for the limited funds available is extremely intense.  We are able to make our facility available when it makes sense; eg an education partner has established course materials, can do their own marketing and bring students to the lab to perform the module.  We can also organize groups to go and conduct classes off site, potentially in schools or as a "boot camp" several times a year such as summer/spring break.

Right now, our primary focus is on enabling early stage start ups/entrepreneurs at the lab and supporting business to business technology development.  We want to increase our education outreach but need to find leaders from the community who can get involved and help us determine things like 1) how many courses would we run per year 2) What is the most effective procedure for partnering with external instructors  3) How to fund education outreach and effectively integrate with our other operations (find specific K-12 grants or funding to support professional training).

Lots of science program ideas were shared. I suggested an evening STEAM program where invitations would be sent several weeks in advance to nearby middle school and high school science teachers to come and share their best iPad apps that bring both art and science into a lesson. A demonstration on ways to bring art, design, dimensional creativity and critical thinking into a scientific presentation using iPad apps.

I'm impressed by the Carlsbad Bio Tech & Beyond Concept and Center, along with what the STEAM program already provides for our educational community. Looking forward to supporting the coordinators and program...

Wish I could make this one, but I'm not available. I used to help teach high school students in the Biogen Idec Community Lab a number of years back and would be happy to help with some of these initiatives.

I'll be there... if I have my car back! Sorry that I couldn't make it tonight. I will be looking at the Safety manual again; tell me if there is anything else I can do.
