Genetic Engineering For Everyone with Genomikon

  • Sep 3, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • Bio, Tech and Beyond (

Join us to meet the developer of Genomikon, a kit that makes genetic engineering accessible for students, hobbyists, and enthusiasts.

Genomikon is a new method for assembling DNA from pre-prepared, modular genetic parts.

Doug Ridgeway is in town for one night only and will share his experience both as an educator and a small businessman/entrepreneur at the forefront of creating innovative teaching methods for introducing the concepts of synthetic biology.

A Genomikon lab introduces students to the following concepts:

How to design and build custom organisms.
Basic biology principles and genetics, including gene, protein, and function.

Lab techniques, including sterile technique, culturing bacteria, transforming DNA, and safe disposal.

Engineering and design in the realm of biology.

Very cool, and fits very well with what BTnB is building. We can definitely help each other! :-)

This is an area for which I have little lab experience, can anyone recommend some subject matter that I could read to help me understand how we can go from chemicals (with Genomikon) to having a living specimen? I hope I phrased the question correctly. Thanks.

Thanks, I remember this from my college course work, I just didn't have the lab experience for it.

Mind if I bring a camera along?
