Molecular Biology of the Cell Study Group

Don’t remember much from high school biology? What you do remember seems light-years behind where biology is today?

Join us as we go through Albert’s Molecular Biology of the Cell textbook.

Inspired by the BioCurious study group for the same, we're going to be working through the book, working together to improve our knowledge of biology!

Every month, we read one chapter and discuss it at the meetup.

The table of contents for the 4th and 5th edition are almost identical, so we don't anticipate big problems if people have different versions. That said, Biology has come a long ways since 2002 (when the 4th edition was published). Of course, it may be interesting for us to contrast the two books.

One useful thing to note is that the 4th edition is available for search on the NIH website by agreement with the publisher: . The agreement does not include browsing, so you can only read the sections that come up in a given search.

    Chris, and everyone,

I'm planning on coming to the next meeting, assuming I find the date. For some reason my Google Calendar does not seem to be logging my Meetup acceptances, which is irritating. Anybody had the same experience? Hints? Note that the Public Library has 20++ people in line waiting for the fourth edition of the book, and there are only about eight copies in the library, so some of you are not going to get it until late February. But I'm sneaky: a.) I've read ahead, and b.) I've got a hold on the Third edition, which for some reason none of those 25++ people thought to ask about.

The book is available online in PDF form, both legally from, I forget, either the publisher or some university, and illegally as a Torrent from a bunch of different places. So nobody can use the library waiting line as an excuse for not coming. Best for the new year to all, and look forward to meeting you at the Hack. -dlj.

Hey David! We'll be discussing the second chapter, so ideally you would have read the first two chapters before the meetup. The first is freely online at http://www.garlandsci..., if that helps you.

Chris, As you know I have the fourth edition from the library, but I just thought I'd take this opportunity to say how sensible you are to reply with a useful (and correct) URL... Well done and thanks.

I'll be there, but sadly Justin won't be with me this week. He's in China meeting with local iGEM teams and other biotech groups. I'm sure he will bring back some interesting info!
