DORBA Beginner Clinic POSTPONED - New Date May 17, 2014

DORBA will have a new beginner clinic on Saturday May 17th at Rowlett Creek Preserve at 9:30 AM.

Blain Norfleet will be your instructor, you can send him a private message at "bikecop" on the Dorba.org website, if you have any questions. Blain is THE mountain bike instructor for the Dallas Police Department and patrols downtown on his bike.

What: There is a "classroom" for about an hour, a mini-skills workshop for 30-45 minutes minutes, and then a ride of an hour or more. So count on approximately 3 hours. Beginner Clinics will consist of basic instruction including bike setup, safety, trail etiquette, bike handling skills such as braking, shifting, riding position, steering, momentum, cornering, and rolling over small obstacles, etc.

Who: The clinic is recommended for riders new to the sport. If you have never ridden a Mountain Bike before or have just started out riding, then this is for you.

Where: RCP Trails Webpage & Google Map: http://www.dorba.org/trail.php?t=22 Meet at the Gazebo. GPS coordinates:[masked] [masked]

Requirements: You do NOT need to be a DORBA member to attend. We DO require that you bring and use your helmet and strongly advise you to bring water, and a small snack that fits in your pocket. And yes, you need to bring your own bike (I get asked!)

Please download, print, sign, and bring with you the following required DORBA Event Waiver: http://files.meetup.com/3841722/NEW-WAIVER.pdf We will have a few there if you forget. Please don't.

Weather: This clinic is dependent upon good weather and trail conditions. CHECK THIS POST THE MORNING OF THE CLINIC for any postponements or cancellations.

I appreciate the class so much and definitely know I need a lot of time on the trails to practice ...it was run well with lots of safety tips and encouragement....

This was a fun class! Any beginners that want to get together as a group once or twice a month to ride and improve skills, let me know. Since I just moved to the area, I am also looking for riding partners on a weekly basis as well.

That was mine. I lost the bracket and all. I was thinking it was my Serfa but I went back out and looked at the box, it's the Niterider. I just put it on, then lost in the first ride :(

Sorry, my crash with the Cub Scout on April 27th on white rock Creek trail has left me with a broken shoulder, and the Dr specifically said NO BIKING. At all. Maybe this fall I'll get to use my new mountain bike. *sniffle*

Ok, just like last week, be sure and check back here for a "go/no-go" on the clinic this Saturday. We will try to post up something definite by Friday evening.

Jack doesn't think it'll be open again until next week because they got another 2 inches of rain overnight.

It will be touch and go for sure. I am in contact with him, we hope to know for sure by Friday afternoon.

I want to start riding with this group but I have more of a pavement bike. Will this be an issue?

    May 8

    • Kristy

I don't know if that would be so much an issue as an uncomfortable ride for the rider. My first Mnt bike was some piece that I got for a handful of penny candy from a kid down the street. It was a hard tail and without front suspension. I still rode all the trails. It did do a number on the wear and tear, but if you like mountain biking on the first couple of tries, you'll do well to invest in a bike made for the conditions. You can purchase a used mtb on Craigslist, at a second hand shop, or yard sale for pretty cheap. It will do fine for a beginner. You could also buy a semi-cheap one from a box store, if you want something brand new. What type of pavement bike do you have?

    • Christopher M.

also in the beginner forum at Dorba.org, there is a loaner bike you can borrow

This clinic is either going to be cancelled or postponed. Still working this out. Stay tuned.

If it weren't for the DORBA clinic, I don't think we would get nearly as much rain, because our clinics sure do seem to cause them!!!! ;-)

  • Christopher M.

I have texted the instructor Blaine, to see if he wants to postpone this one week. Please stand by.

Sure did rain a lot. Will this happen?

    May 9

  • Blain N.

Looking forward to Saturday! Because there is rain in the forcast for this week, be sure and check back here for updates. If it rains this week, I will be in close contact with the trail steward and will post up as soon as I know something. Hope to see everyone there!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
