SF/F Group

This sub-group focuses on Science Fiction and Fantasy, so if you have anything that falls under that category — be it short story, poem or novel-in-progress — then come! We'd love to hear from you.

Our format allows each reader 15 minutes to present their work... followed by approximately 20 minutes of feedback from the other attendees. To ensure a fair opportunity to respond, each attendee is limited to 1 minute of feedback time. (Using this structure, we are usually able to get through four readers in any given night.)

If a reader elects to post their work in advance (NOT a requirement!), members will be able to access that work under the "More" > "Files" section from the drop-down menu, above.

Adding to Sam's posts about the business of writing, here's some lectures about effective story craft and structure by Jim Butcher. The thrust of each lesson is in the first half hour of the videos, after which he takes questions. Some of of the questions are fan questions, but his answers to the story craft questions are great advice too.

    Hi everyone!
I’m posting here looking for readers for my novel – if you’re interested, read on!

If you haven’t heard me read, the book combines: Victoriana, alt history, quest/adventure, science thriller, magic, invented religions, the Orient Express, deep dark secrets, old wounds, Russian and Ottoman spies… did I mention Victorians and magic? The final word count is ~96k. The third draft of The Walls of Jericho is now complete, living on my computer, and looking for readers. My hope is to have a polished draft after this round of comments, and start the agent search this winter.

If you’re interested, let me know, and I will send you the novel in your preferred format. I’ll be grateful for any written feedback you’re willing to provide, but I’ll also host a dinner at the beginning of December and provide food and beverages for anyone who can make it to come and discuss the book. You can email me at [masked] if you're interested. Thanks so much everyone!!
    Liz

Wish I could come! I'm out of state and my return flight is later than I'd planned, though.

I apologize to the writers; I had my seasonal flu shot yesterday afternoon and woke up in the middle of night feeling like (insert adjective for bad) - low back pain, headache, grumpy, etc. Trust me, you don't want me there. Convalescing. I'll send written critiques later. Have fun at Bailey's.

Since this came up after Courtney's reading, and because it is a useful reference for anyone writing historical settings, here is a link to the Online Etymological Dictionary: http://www.etymonline.com

Thanks David this is awesome. Question - is there a way to post a running list of links like this somewhere on our meetup? Bill Ferris has a good one for what agents want, there's been a number of others

Agents and editors are listing what types of books they're looking for on Twitter. Just search the hashtag #MSWL (which stands for Manuscript Wish List). Some kind person has also compiled all the wish lists on this site: http://agentandeditorwishlist.tumblr.com/ MSWL not a venue to pitch agents or editors, but you might find someone who's looking for exactly what you're writing. This is how I found my agent, so I can definitely say it works.

Thanks for the clarification. "Define the definitions"? Urk. Bad form for a would-be writer. Must not have been thinking straight...

I subscribed the RSS feed, looks like a good place to start compiling a list of agents to query.

Turns out Dependency Isolation is at the same time. Need to go to that since it heavily relates to what I am doing at work...

I just posted the finished fist act of my manuscript. I'm not going to read from it at meetings, because it's 50,000 words, but if anyone is interested in a hard science fiction pulp adventure story starring a crew of emotional cripples and malcontents (and a giant alien Tardigrade from Venus), I would love some feedback.

I haven't finished it yet! There's still all of act 2 and most of act 3 to write!

*First* act, sweet mercy, I meant first act.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
