SF/F Group

This sub-group focuses on Science Fiction and Fantasy, so if you have anything that falls under that category — be it short story, poem or novel-in-progress — then come! We'd love to hear from you.

Our format allows each reader 15 minutes to present their work... followed by approximately 20 minutes of feedback from the other attendees. To ensure a fair opportunity to respond, each attendee is limited to 1 minute of feedback time. (Using this structure, we are usually able to get through four readers in any given night.)

If a reader elects to post their work in advance (NOT a requirement!), members will be able to access that work under the "More" > "Files" section from the drop-down menu, above.

Since this is our first organized non-holiday meeting of the new year, everyone is encouraged to bring material; slots will be allocated by the event hosts — Samantha, Bill, Ryan, and myself — as length and numbers permit.

Readings from new attendees wishing to test the waters and follow our guidelines will be given precedence over those from frequent contributors.

Courtney reminded me of the existing backup list from December 17. The queue has been adjusted accordingly.

Although the following almost never needs to be said, given that this is the start of a new year the reminder is apt: Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. If you attend, the expectation is that you will participate according to our guidelines and structure. Honest feedback is encouraged. (As a simple counterexample, disrespectful, derogatory, or deliberately inflammatory rhetoric does not qualify as "honest feedback.")

Just getting done in Richmond. Won't make the meeting. Might make Baileys.

I so wanted to come, but I'm still carrying around my parting Christmas present from California (a cold) and I don't want you all to come down with the plague. First Allegra's, now this. Sigh. I see you have a full house scheduled, so that's good. I hope to see you in two weeks!

    Do we have readers tomorrow?

If we're short, I have some flash fiction I could share.

I still hope to make it tonight, but an ongoing medical emergency makes that hard to predict.

    • Fraser

      Prayers in for healthy recovery.

I'm erring on the side of caution now. Since this is my first week at a new job and i have a shift tomorrow morning i better sit out. i'll miss you guys!

      We'll miss you too.

    Bill as in Bill who?

    January 14, 2014

    • M. David B.

Bill, the backup list was set during our December 3 meeting, which took place at Atomic Empire. Either Ryan or Bill Ferris ran the show that night; both Rich and I arrived late and stood on the sidelines, while Samantha was not yet one of the event hosts.

Based on that, and also the fact that Bill F. isn't able to attend tonight, I think you're up.

      January 14, 2014

    • Heather Jane Mummery F.

Marc - When things were up in the air, I volunteered via email to be a Backup reader this time (you only have one, it appears)...that offer still stands, or I'm happy to let you assign readers for next time at the meeting, however you want to do it :). See you tonight!

      January 14, 2014

  • Ada Milenkovic B.

I won't be able to make the meeting tonight. Catch you guys next time.

My book, Into the Tides, is officially coming out tomorrow! Hurrah!
    https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/393665
It should be on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo very soon, and iTunes right after that. Forgive me if I seem a little excited at the next meeting... ;)

Thanks everyone! Yes, I made a lot of changes, many of them at the suggestions of a very wise group of people. ;) It's made quite a difference, and your feedback really improved the story.

I'll have to bow out for this one, but hopefully I'll be there next time.

Science fiction and fantasy fiction are two genres that repel me. It is a kid's way to figure out how to write and how to think. It's like drawing a cartoon. Here are the four golden rules you should follow:
    1.Write in your own voice.
2.Write what you know, not what you invent.
    3. Show, don't tell.
    4. Have a professional edit your work.

    • Fraser

I'd be very impressed if the gentleman's work was as well drawn as, say a Miyazaki cartoon or as lively as Warner Brothers.

      January 13, 2014

Interesting comment. It can't be serious, though. Sci-fi and fantasy rule the world. The top 5 movies of all time: AVATAR, TITANIC, AVENGERS, HARRY POTTER, IRON MAN 3 blah blah blah. Funny that the top 10 movies have 2 that AREN'T sci-fi or fantasy. And while we're on the topic. I'd like to see some of Jay's works. Can't imagine it's worth a pile of Bantha fodder - oh wait, that's sci-fi too.

Congrats again to everyone who participated in Illogicon, maybe next year. And thanks to Allegra for another AWESOME writing day!!

Yes! I too hope that Illogicon was as fun and productive as possible for all! I'm looking forward to hearing about it ;)

You don't read aloud. You send your material on E mail to others who read it at their leisure. Then you critique the work at the meeting. Merely reading aloud is wasteful. Members would not have the time to review the work over a reasonable time period and then have constructive suggestions or other ideas. Why are not every member's E mail known to all the other members?

    January 12, 2014

    • M. David B.

Jay, your comments suggest that you are both unfamiliar with the format of our gatherings, and disrespectful of our members' privacy. Please consider this a warning; it is the only one you will receive.

Jay i think it is fairly obvious this is not a group you will enjoy, but i leave that up to you to discover.

Alas, I've decided I don't want to trouble anyone for a ride, especially since I may have had to leave early anyway, so I shall be seeing everyone on Tuesday. As for backups, did anyone else want to read? Heather has volunteered as 1st backup.
