SF/F Group

This sub-group focuses on Science Fiction and Fantasy, so if you have anything that falls under that category — be it short story, poem or novel-in-progress — then come! We'd love to hear from you.

Our format allows each reader 15 minutes to present their work... followed by approximately 20 minutes of feedback from the other attendees. To ensure a fair opportunity to respond, each attendee is limited to 1 minute of feedback time. (Using this structure, we are usually able to get through four readers in any given night.)

If a reader elects to post their work in advance (NOT a requirement!), members will be able to access that work under the "More" > "Files" section from the drop-down menu, above.

Readers are:

Did Jennifer read last night? The file isn't appearing for me, but I'd love to be able to give written feedback since I couldn't be there in person.

      She abstained, courteously.

FYI, non-Facebookers, ya'll are invited to my birthday party, March 8th at 8pm! It's a theme party: A Night at the Movies, in celebration of all movies. There will be no whole movies viewed at the time, but a video honoring them and kick-butt dance music. Guests my dress however they wish (costumes as characters, directors, movie types, critics or anything else). I'm going glamorous ;) Please, NO gifts, just your presence. Directions are under Files: Directions to Birnamwood. Hope to see you.

I really appreciated everyone's feedback last night! Thanks so much, and thanks again to the organizers for finding us a new home!

    February 26, 2014

    • Fraser

And I've got to second the thanks on both counts.

I wish to thank everyone for their feedback - valuable and unconstrained- Thanks

The quality of stories being generated is very high - what a group.

I will be able to be there for the first little bit, but I will have to leave early and don't want to displace our friend on the waitlist over it.

Changing my own RSVP now, since I'll have to miss this evening.

      February 25, 2014

    • Sam

Actually, I'll have to drop out too. :( A bunch of stuff got dumped on me this afternoon, and the rest of the night is a wash. Can we drop our lowest grade? I'd like to officially drop the entire month of February 2014.

I've posted my backup read, though I believe Phaedra hasn't read before. So she should get dibs if we do need one.

Unfortunately, I'm not ready. I'll be there tonight, but I'm going to have to push back reading, as I've got visitors for a couple of weeks.

My attendance will be spotty until after March. But I'll be happy to chip in for whatever we have to pay even if I can't come to the meeting. I'll consider it dues.

    February 24, 2014

  • Ada Milenkovic B.

I have rehearsal Tuesday evening, but I will come to Bailey's afterwards.

Hi folks. The organizers are busy trying to find a new venue for meetings going forward. I believe that Atomic Empire will give us a private room if we can guarantee spending at least $50 as a group that evening. If we maintain approximately 25 members per meeting, basically everyone would only have to spend $2--and that's assuming nobody bought comics/games/whatever. This is just one idea we're pursuing, though, and we'll continue to keep trying. Please keep sending us ideas as you have them.

None of us want to institute membership dues. Wherever we end up, though, we want to make it worth their while to host us, which means giving them some business (unless we're able to get space at a library, of course).

I imagine I can find something to buy in a comics store. Would have been easier if I hadn't hit Ultimate Comics today, but even so.

      February 20, 2014

    • Cheryl Mott S.

I agree with the concept of buying a few drinks and snacks so that we have the private room at AE. A small price to pay to keep our very cool format.

      February 23, 2014

  • Ryan J.

We've been able to secure hosting at the Chapel Hill Public Library once each month, but no more. It's a very nice meeting room, so we've decided to take advantage of the space we can get there, and use the space at Atomic Empire when we cannot- basically, we'll alternate between the two locations. If we cannot secure the library, we default to Atomic.

We're hoping this will, rather than being awkward, become beneficial- perhaps one location is easier to reach for some of us than another, so instead of being barely able to make it all the time, perhaps one of the locations is actually better.

The first meeting of our new arrangement will be at Atomic. Their table are free for us to use, and they have a conference room that is available for a charge in advance. We don't want to take up a collection, so I'm going to propose an arrangement that may work for all, but until then, assume we're at the back tables.

Thanks for hanging in there with us, it's a weird transition.

As I recall, the amount they wanted was not too bad, and could be applied in the form of purchases in the store - so hopefully we can coordinate that so people who actually want to buy something can do so and get us over their room fee.

When we had our meeting at Atomic Empire, we thought it was too noisy. But I remember hearing that for a fee, we could have a private room. If we're going to have to pay at Straw Valley, maybe we should see if Atomic Empire would be cheaper.

When our leaders talk to them again, please ask if it's okay to bring something to drink if we're buying a book/comics (they don't have tea and I'd sooner drink that than what they do have).

      February 20, 2014

    • Courtney

I agree with Frazer. I don't mind buying a little something, but their coffee is pretty awful. I would prefer to bring my own and buy some chips or something. I think it would be a great venue though, if we can get a private room.

Wherever we end up, I have uploaded the beginning of my new fantasy novel for comments. It is the same file as several weeks ago with a few minor grammatical changes (for those who already download it). I feel I will be able to read about 1 and 1/2 chapters, so this file is chapters 1 & 2.

    1 · February 20, 2014

  • Fraser

So are we at Straw Valley again?

    February 19, 2014

    • Fraser

Not exactly. But the new management wants a)cash and b)everyone has to buy something to drink. So we're exploring other options.

      February 19, 2014

    • Dara

Hmmm. We could do something whereby we alternate libraries then.

Other branches of this meetup meet at Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Anybody been there? I think there might be a small rental fee.

A reminder that my upcoming Writer's Work Day is Sun. Feb. 23, from noon to 5pm at my place. For those who aren't on Face Book (or my friends yet, hint, hint), you're still invited. Directions are called Directions to Birnamwood under the files. We're about 15 minutes West and South of Carrborro. That is all.

    February 15, 2014

    • Dara

Alas I won't be able to make it out to Birnamwood this time around. I'll be working late.

Several of you have asked about getting tickets for the show I'm in, The Sorcerer at the Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham. If you get the tickets through me, you a discount: a preferred seating ticket for $22 plus $3 handling fee, $25 total. The same ticket from ticketmaster costs $31.50. (There are even cheaper tickets if you want.) The regular performances are Fri Mar 28, Sat Mar 29 at 8 pm and Sun Mar 30 at 2 pm. To get tickets, fill out the form called Sorcerer March 2014ticketform which I've posted in the files and give it to me before Mar 19 with a check or credit card info. There's also a preview performance on Thurs Mar 27 for $10 for any seat and no handling fee. For those, fill out the form and get it to me before Mar 19 with cash or check.

I can pick up money and forms at writers meeting if I don't have rehearsal, or at Bailey's afterwards if I do.
