SF/F Group

This sub-group focuses on Science Fiction and Fantasy, so if you have anything that falls under that category — be it short story, poem or novel-in-progress — then come! We'd love to hear from you.

Our format allows each reader 15 minutes to present their work... followed by approximately 20 minutes of feedback from the other attendees. To ensure a fair opportunity to respond, each attendee is limited to 1 minute of feedback time. (Using this structure, we are usually able to get through three readers in any given night.)

If a reader elects to post their work in advance (NOT a requirement!), members will be able to access that work under the "More" > "Files" section from the drop-down menu, above.

Agenda:

• 6:30-6:45 -- Networking

• 6:45-6:50 -- Introductions/format

• 6:50-9:00 -- Readings and critiques

Readers are:

• Ryan

• Gerald

• Allegra

Backup Readers are:

• Courtney

• Fraser

For people wanting to go to Saturday the 9th's showing of Guardians of the Galaxy at Southpoint Mall: the showtimes aren't posted yet, but let's go ahead and get started by telling me what times are available for you. This way, when times are posted, I can pick the best one for everyone.

Sweet! We'll hold seats for everyone then!

Sorry I missed it! My wife and I had a date-night; no grandchild, no daughter. We went out by ourselves. Will wonders never end?

Nettie, here. Hi, everyone. In support of Jeff's writing efforts, I set up a few afternoons of focused writing at the library, and Meetup just approved the group, so I'd like to invite anyone whom it might also help. And, I wanted to thank you for graciously including me in the viewing of Guardians of the Galaxy Sunday. I enjoyed meeting those of you who attended. Well folks, I'm not a bit happy about it but I need to bow out of the group for a while. I don't care to share the details. Suffice it to say a lot of things are going on right now. I want to remain in touch and I'll do my best to follow along with the readers and post comments when I can. Until next we meet....

I'm shouldering in on Jeff's account to ask if you all have another method of communication where I could share things like the following link, which contains a list of author digital marketing tools (unfortunately via slides, which I don't like, sorry, and hopefully not too basic for you). More importantly, thank you for the comradery you have shared with Jeff, who comes home smiling from your meetups, which is a gift to me.

    Best wishes,
    Nettie

So if anyone wants to pick blueberries there's probably one good week left to do that, and afterwards the bushes will start petering out as the season ends.

I live about 5 minutes west of Carrboro off of Highway 54, the address is 2113 NC Hwy 54 (or you can also pull in at 2123, we have 2 driveways and the second mailbox is better marked but there's a gate). It can be a bit hard to find since people drive so fast on the highway, if you're coming from Carrboro look for a small used car lot 'White Cross used cars' on the left, and then we're like 150 feet past that on the right. There are some tall cypress trees in the front, and then behind that there's a fence with the blueberry bushes. Park in back by the red sports car.

The deal with picking is we don't charge any money, but we ask you to leave half of what you pick in one of the fridges in the carport. Email me if you're coming at [masked]. I'm also on Facebook (of course). Also my phone number is[masked]

Also if you pull into the 2123 driveway just park around the gate. Don't leave the gate open since I'll sometimes have the dogs with me in there if I'm picking, they're very friendly though.

This might be helpful for other new people like me. The author Brandon Sanderson has an entire college creative writing course online on youtube, and one of the earliest videos is about the types of comments he thinks are helpful for people in a writing group. The main point it to view yourself as a 'test audience' for the piece rather than as an editor, it's better to give detailed reactions than try and give advice as to how to fix something. That being said, if you aren't in the target audience for a story, your reaction to it is probably not a useful piece of data for the writer. When I'm in that situation, I focus my critique on technical details.

This advice is given to screenwriters too, for whom "table reads" are often a normal part of the process: take recommendations for specific fixes with a grain of salt, but listen very carefully for indications of problem areas and things that don't work. Of course, one of the things that gives professional screenwriters the most heartburn is when the producer, director, or star gives "notes" for specific changes. If the screenwriter hasn't established a relationship with them that says, "you tell me the problems, I'll come up with the solutions," a good script can turn bad very quickly.

So, anyone up for getting a group together to go see Guardians of the Galaxy? I was thinking either Sunday Aug 3rd, Friday Aug 8th, or Saturday Aug 9th. Anyone in?

Hey, all. I'm hosting another Writer's Work Day on Sun. July 27th from 12-6pm. For those who are unfamiliar, it's a chance to chow down, enjoy fellowship with other writers and work on your projects at my wooded retreat. We live about 15 minutes from Carrboro (South and West of it). Directions are posted under files and called Directions to Birnamwood. I make food and many bring additional, but I don't require it, so no stress. We have two big, but gentle greyhounds --FYI. Also, if you're on FaceBook and we're not connected, please friend me, Allegra Gulino.

Hi everybody. At the last meeting, one of the Atomic Empire staff was asking about payment for the room. To avoid any future confusion, Sam called them this afternoon and verified with AE management that as long as we spend the full $50 by the time we vacate the room, there's no problem. Given that we've always been able to meet the minimum amount needed for the room, if a staff member does stop by asking for money, we'll be able to quietly settle any possible discrepancies with a minimum of fuss.

    1 · July 24, 2014

    • Larian

Bill the reason the last quota wasn't met was because of the weather scaring off half the group. under normal circumstances this will not be an issue.

      July 24, 2014

    • Bill F.

To eliminate confusion, the sales quota was indeed met by the end of the meeting, and by some margin. To date, no one has been stuck with the bill because we didn't meet the $50 minimum.
