SF/F Group

This sub-group focuses on Science Fiction and Fantasy, so if you have anything that falls under that category — be it short story, poem or novel-in-progress — then come! We'd love to hear from you.

Our format allows each reader 15 minutes to present their work... followed by approximately 20 minutes of feedback from the other attendees. To ensure a fair opportunity to respond, each attendee is limited to 1 minute of feedback time. (Using this structure, we are usually able to get through four readers in any given night.)

If a reader elects to post their work in advance (NOT a requirement!), members will be able to access that work under the "More" > "Files" section from the drop-down menu, above.

Readers are:

 Ken

Heather

Cheryl

Backup Readers are:

Travis

David (Larian)

Sam C.

Deep Backup:

I wanted to thank all of you for some terrific comments yesterday. I take each one into consideration and really work with them. Much appreciated! As always I'd love more insights on technical issues as I'm not a scientist ... But many of you are. As Ada said so aptly, I need to work within the rules of the real world, at least as a jumping off point. Thanks again!

Any army/infantry experts out there? I can't figure out if the army uses the term "stow" -- as in "stow your weapons." If not, what would be used instead for "holstering" grenade launchers, flamethrowers, and machine guns?

    August 25

    • Gary

Yep, the Navy connection was what initially concerned me. It sounds like "stow" is indeed wrong. Thanks, James, for dredging up some alternatives!

      August 26

    • James P.

Oh, also just occurred to me 'slinging' is the rifle equivalent of holstering, you sling the rifle on your shoulder by the strap

Sorry, won't be able to make it tonight, folks. I'll see you at the next one!

Thank you, I plan to relax and take lots of vitamin C; I am supposed to go to a book signing tomorrow for Louise Penny, who inspired me to read again.

  • Travis S.

As expected, I will have to skip tonight to help here at home. But I will be there for the next meeting, so please keep my spot on the reading list for me.

    Thanks and have fun tonight

I won't be able to stay past 7:30 tonight, but I look forward to seeing everyone regardless!

HI guys, this Tuesday would be my first meeting. Unfortunately I do not have a car, and the location seems sort of distant to Trinity Park, would anyone be willing to give me a ride there and back?

    August 22

    • Ada Milenkovic B.

Chester, I live in Morehead Hill which is near Trinity Park. I am planning to go to our social gathering at Bailey's Pub after the meeting, so if you're willing to attend that as well, I can give you a ride.

      August 22

    • Ada Milenkovic B.

Chester, you may have made other plans about the Tues Aug 26 meeting, and if so that's fine. But if you still want a ride from me, I need to know your address and that you do want a ride by 4 pm on Tues Aug 26 so I can arrange my schedule accordingly.

You're welcome. Their stated response time is 30 days and they got back to me much faster, so that's encouraging.

My file for this Tuesday is uploaded! I've included it from the beginning (which includes some revisions), but will start reading from page 24.

I could swear there's a word often used to describe a lion sitting/reclining, but I can't come up with it. Am I wrong? Is my mind playing tricks on me?

    August 19

    • Larian

      Poised?

Sitting w/ all paws on the ground = Lion sejant, Lion sejant erect is sitting w/front paws up (like batting at something, lying down but w/head up = Lion couchant. Lying completely down = Lion Dormant

Different question... Someone mentioned to me a website called Pure writing, or Pure write... or something like that where writers go to critique publishers, and they wanted me to do a write up on Freedom Forge Press, but i cant find the site... any help?

    August 17

    • Larian

awesome thanks... i'm awaiting registration approval at the moment.

Maggie, I've heard some really nasty rumors about Absolute Write. Namely that the site administrators are bullies, and denigrate anything that isn't done precisely as they suggest. That said, I have no personal experience. I found them when I was looking up writing retreats.

Here is the information for Bewildering Stories, as I mentioned last night:

    http://www.bewilderingstories.com

They are seeking submissions of all kinds of speculative fiction, from poetry to novels. No pay, but the best stories get voted into the Quarterly and Annual Reviews, so there's a chance for a feather in your cap. Hampton and I both have stories coming out with them soon!

I really look forward to meeting like-minded individuals who will inspire me to write.
