RE: [dachshund-427] Puppy pix

Rosemary and Cheri you are both correct!  A double dapple can only be produced when 2 dapples are bred directly.  I feel I can speak intelligently on this subject, as I used to show and breed Longhaired Miniature Dachshunds several years ago, and that also included dapples.  As for the chocolates in the litter, chocolate is a recessive gene, meaning both parents have the chocolate gene, red was the dominant gene.  (A recessive gene is one that is not expressed unless there are two of them, one from each parent.)  So by looking at the litter, the sire was a chocolate dapple (Shhh don’t tell Trent), Daisy is a red dapple with chocolate in her background.

I hope I don’t offend anyone here, but pardon me while I jump up on my soapbox.  Anyone can take and breed two dogs together.  It takes someone very special and knowledgeable to do it correctly and responsibly.  By that I mean, researching pedigrees (not all Champions produce Champions), bone structures, etc etc etc.  Issues such as Blindness, Epilepsy, and PRA (to name a few) are hereditary, with much discussion around disc disease also showing to be hereditary.  Daisy’s situation/background is a extremely sad situation that, thank goodness, is going to have a happy ending for both momma and babies.

As a newer member of Dachshunds Anonymous, I am extremely impressed with your organization and the AWESOME work that you and Wag’ N Train Terrier Rescue do.  I applaud your efforts and support you 100%.

Just a regular choc dapple wouldn't have all the white patches and white on his belly.  They would be solid dapple.  Here's a pic of one:

And you are right....a double dapple can only be produced when 2 dapples are bred directly.  Mama is a red dapple.  However, Trent is a sable....not a dapple.  I decided not to tell him about this little "issue." I don't want to ruin his excitement over the birth of "his" puppies.

However, you may want to watch for us on a future episode of "Maury" having a DNA test....

I thought. double dapple could only occur when two dapples were bred directly? I was hoping he was just a chocolate dapple. I haven't whelped a litter before so I don't know all the ins and outs of double dapples so I could be wrong.

They all sire are cute and mama looks more comfy with all those babies out of her tummy! Five is a good sized litter for a doxie; blessings they were born into rescue and not in a mill!

If I could just add to Cheri's statement  . . . it is too bad we have to watch for that, due to irresponsible breeding.

One way or another he WILL be a happy puppy BECAUSE he is now in rescue and can go to a loving home.

The little beige, brown and white guy appears to be a chocolate double dapple.  He's a cutie, but time will tell if he inherits any of the double dapple issues....for now all seem to be doing well. :)

Trent maintains that he is the proud papa, even though none of the babies look like him.  We seem to have a few chocolates in our box of candy.  I don't know if either Mama or Trent has chocolate in their lineage or not....  (I am working on that fuzzy little puppy coat just in case... ;)
