In the second installment of our 2014 Round Panel Series, Daily NK provided the opportunity to learn about North Korea’s policy towards women and semi-legal economic activities. Daily NK’s news team leader Mijin Kang explained the role of the Women’s Union in North Korean society, under which she served as leader in her village. Kang reported that the Women’s Union is mixed in its efficacy as a social organization, despite remaining entirely under state control. She also told of her daughter’s experience, who from the age of eight had to help with farming and housework, as Kang’s divorce meant she was forced to take on organizational responsibilities normally fulfilled by her husband. Kang’s talk offered a unique insight into life and society in North Korea.
