This is a symbolic way to kick off 2014 in healthy, outdoor style. First Day Hikes are held across the country. Some hikers bring dogs on leashes.
The Park Manager will lead hikers on a "moderate" roughly 1 mile hike. They call it moderate, but in the past it's been pretty easy. Route could change depending on wind direction and may involve climbing up a snowy hill, but there are lots of people to break the trail and it's not a fast hike.
This event is put on by the park, so if there are any questions, or if the weather is questionable, contact Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park at (701)[masked] or visit www.parkrec.nd.gov. More information on First Days Hikes throughout the nation can be found at www.americasstateparks.org/first-day-hikes.
There is a park entrance fee ($5). You can purchase an annual pass ($25) here https://apps.nd.gov/pnr/sp/services/public/main.htm or at the Parks and Recreation office in Bismarck, 1600 E. Century Avenue, Suite 3. You may check out a pass from the Bismarck or Mandan public libraries, http://www.parkrec.nd.gov/information/parks/library_loan_program.html.
