Film Scanning Discussion and Show

We'll be doing some darkroom printing soon, but why not have a meetup about the lighter side of things? (aka, lets give the opposition a chance)

I figured we could share out tips and tricks that we use when we scan at home.

When RSVPing, reply with the scanner model you have or which one you might be interested in.

All is welcome, no scanner is required, but maybe bring some film to get scanned.

I ditto to Greg and Tom's comments below!
It was very nice meeting you all. Unfortunately could not stay long enough to tour the facility, next time for sure!

Here are the steps to turn on the triple-press screen Invert Colors for the iOS 7 for instant negative film preview.

go to Settings > General > Scroll all the way down to Accessibility Shortcut
    Change it to "Invert Colors"

Now you can launch the camera and preview your films in real time.

We've secured the "Monroe Room" at the Dallas Makerspace.

Use the entrance from Monroe Drive. Knock if you're not a member. We're in the classroom on the left. http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/5/e/a/highres_334213802.jpeg

Anyone know the chance of DMS buying a scanner that does the whole strip of 35mm at one time?

    February 10, 2014

    • Marc

Highly doubt it, but maybe we can help with raising interest!

      February 10, 2014

  • Marc

If you have any prints from a scan you did, please bring them. I'd like for people to give printed examples from their scans with the scan settings used.

    February 10, 2014

    • Laidric S.

What if the scan settings are just play around until it looks good?

      February 10, 2014

    • Marc

Explaining how you got to your results is helpful, so that's fine. We all experiment.

I'm looking at local libraries that have rooms to available. Is Carrollton do able for everyone?

I looked at Dallas Libraries and they require a insurance certificate which I do not have. Thoughts?

      Laidric, yeah, that's no problem.

No scanner, but interested in OpticFilm 120.

    January 15, 2014

    • Greg H.

I've actually gotten the OpticFilm 120 now. Finicky is a good description, and SilverFast is terrible IMO, but I'm pretty happy with the results so far.

      February 5, 2014

    • Marc

I hear SilverFast needs some getting used to.

      February 5, 2014

  • Laidric S.

Marc, are you still looking around for locations or are we meeting at that library (date TBA)?

    February 5, 2014

    • Laidric S.

Okay, are they cool with us dragging scanners and what not in their space?

      February 5, 2014

    • Marc

I hope so. I'll make sure of everything and make sure we have enough room for us.

Is your computer portable? I was thinking of having this event at a library conference room and see if we can share a projector.

The Epson. I tried playing with Vuescan or that other one and didn't have the attention span to learn it at the time.

      January 16, 2014

    • Laidric S.

Yeah, the interface of any of these scanning programs are confusing. I made the decision when I first started scanning to go with Vuescan, so I searched out every resource I could about it, and never looked back at Epson. The Opticfilm comes with Silverfast, which I attempted to use, but it's userface is worse than Vuescan in my opinion. I think the biggest thing that swayed me toward Vuescan is the fact that you can use it with any scanner that's supported, so if you have a flatbed and a film scanner, you can use that one program to scan with both of them.

Currently running a dual scanner setup, a Plustek Opticfilm 120 and an Epson V700 (which if I remember correctly, I purchased from Kerry through Craigslist!), for larger formats [when I start shooting 4x5] and for Instant film print scans

If possible can we have this on a week end? I normally work nights. canon Canoscan 9000f. I've scanned 35mm and 120, I started scanning at a low resolution the first pass to see there worth a higher resolution scan this has saved a lot of time.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
