Photographers Photographing Photographers

Have you needed a new profile photo for LinkedIn, FB, or Meetup?

Need help shooting profile shots outdoors ?

Let's get together and shoot images of each other.  It is a way to experiment with instructing your subject to pose, getting off-camera lighting right in an outdoor environment, and meeting some of your fellow photographers in the group.

We will meet, be divided randomly in groups of 3-4 with same brand cameras.  Go off and take advantage of the diverse cityscape for shots.  Let's say about 1-1/2 hours to 2 hours.

• Get some fresh profile shots for fellow photographers.

• Get a spring refresher in posing, using off-camera lighting outdoors, and using available light/shade to your advantage.

• Learn to use manual settings to do profile shots.

Off-Camera Speedlights SetUp

Bring what you have.  If you do not have an off-camera speedlight setup, I will try to pair people with like brand camera and hopefully others will share.    If you want to purchase inexpensive off-camera speedlight sets, contact one of our camera store partners, or email the organizers for suggestions.  Most of you have a speedlight, you just need a trigger/receiver set, stand, umbrella (at minimum), and standbags.  Yes, sandbags, or a trusty assistant when working outdoors.  Triggers/receivers come in the economy Chevy range to the high end studio (Rolls Royce) range.  Most of us drove Chevys and Fords and got to work on time.

What to bring:

• Camera with appropriate lens.  Something in the range of 100mm or less.  While that[masked]mm lens is great, there is not much room shooting urban headshots to really take advantage.  A 50mm fast lens is a great option.  For me, my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 on a cropped camera is ideal for this.

•  Speedlite with off-camera set up.  If you don't have that, just bring your speedlite.  Light stand, umbrellas, flash triggers, and sand bags.

• A 5-in-1 reflector comes in handy.

• Bottled water - not much around.

Parking - There is street parking at the meters.  To the best of my knowledge, meters are now free during the day on weekends.  There are several lots that are around $5 per day.  Some businesses have lots, park at your own risk there.

After event - BuzzBrews is within walking distance if want to discuss what worked, didn't work.

Thank you Rusty for hosting the meeting. Rusty you did a terrific job of guiding the group to learn about posing the subject, framing the background and using the available light in multiple situations. I learned about illuminators, soft boxes and other equipment alternatives. I especially enjoyed shooting with Diana, Roxy Ann & Matt. Thanks Matt for your help with shadows in my backgrounds. Thanks to all; it was a great Meet-up!

Wish I was going to be in town. Sounds like fun, and I could learn a thing or two! I'll keep my eyes out for the next event. Dee
