I am an Iranian born and raised non-believer.
I consider atheism a state of awareness. Being a Middle Easterner, I was exposed to all of the monotheisms specially Islam. I can say that I always was an atheist deep down but I couldn't admit it because of the environment that I lived in (Iran).

not all atheists are free thinking. I think you should know that some theists call themselves free thinkers. They believe in god but not the dogma/control of the church. Among us atheist a free thinker = atheist but theists will think otherwise.
