I'm looking for a very specific book.
Do any of you know of a history of the Christian Bible
that wasn't written by a believer?

I'm going to give you some books that might fit your desires and I will comment briefly on them.

1. What do you do with a chocolate Jesus? by Thomas Quinn. This is an enjoyable, sarcastic review of Christianity and the Bible by a Skeptic.

2. Misquoting Jesus by Bart D. Ehrman. I believe he has come out of the closet as at least an agnostic. It is "The story behind who changed the Bible and Why". I thought it well done for a 260 page paperback.

3. Bondage of the Mind by R.D. Gold. I'm not sure whether Gold is an atheist or not but note that both Michael Shermer and Christopher Hitchens recommend the book. It concentrates on the recent research involving the Old Testament and although not a scholarly book it has decent references and I found it to be an enjoyable read.

Wow. I'm seldom here, yet two of the latest comments are from me.

Traffic really is slow lately!
