Monthly Meeting - "Soft Apocalypse" by Will McIntosh

"Soft Apocalypse" by Will McIntosh

http://goo.gl/PoEu7V

Our monthly meeting to review the current book. As usual please bring one part of the book you really enjoyed or didn't for discussion.

Length - 239 pages

What happens when resources become scarce and society starts to crumble? As the competition for resources pulls America's previously stable society apart, the "New Normal" is a Soft Apocalypse. This is how our world ends; with a whimper instead of a bang.   New social structures and tribal connections spring up across America, as the previous social structures begin to dissolve. Locus Award finalist and John W. Campbell Memorial Award finalist Soft Apocalypse follows the journey across the Southeast of a tribe of formerly middle class Americans as they struggle to find a place for themselves and their children in a new, dangerous world that still carries the ghostly echoes of their previous lives.

I have always been out of my league with this group but have loved reading/hearing about the books and the sci-fi genre in general. Lately I feel more like I just sit there listening the entire time though. (sorta like my Italian language group LOL ) I read Soft Apocalypse but didn't think it was up to our usual standard.
I was going to check out another book club that meets tonight but their books (they choose 2 for each meeting I guess) were crap :-/
My Italian book club is meeting tonight too strangely enough and I like most of what we read, but they have taken to reading bible verses during the meeting.
I realize this all falls under "who gives a crap" but I think you guys are great, I just don't feel like I contribute anything really. (sometimes I'm thinking stuff, just don't say it (in my defense I am kinda shy) ) :-D <- notice the smile

Sorry you don't feel you are a good fit. I always thought you added to the diversity in the group.

As to a book club on booze, I'm all for it, but it should be on the weekend and with samples!

    Hi Elizabeth,
This book wasn't my cup of tea either. Hope you like the next one more.

Got stuck with extra work tonight and could not make it. Sorry I had to miss the discussion. I do have to say that this book would not be in my top ten.

Interesting differences to the expanded novel. Good short story.

Here is a link I found to the short story with the same name that Will McIntosh expanded into the novel. You will recognize it as the speed dating scene, with some differences.

Just noticed that Amazon video has a new series "The Man In The High Castle", based on the P. K. Dick book we read a while ago.
