--Getting tired of shooting at boring paper targets?
--Want to try something new but not ready for full run-and-gun?
--Want to just try something new?

Than this is the event for you! Steel plate matches are kind of a middle ground between the stand/shoot at a range firing line, and the shoot/move/reload of the IDPA type match.

These steel plate matches have shown to be a great entry point into the world of competition shooting.

More Details:

  • All competitors start with the pistol holstered (exception - Novice class shooters start with the handgun in hand and pointed at a 45-degree angle at the targets - i.e., the "low ready" position).
  • All competitors begin each course of fire from a standing position within a 3x3 "shooting box."
  • The steel targets are positioned 8-25 yards away from the "shooting box."
  • The steel targets vary in size - usually 18"x24" rectangular plates and 8", 10", or 12" round plates.
  • The match consists of 5 different stages (courses of fire), and the competitor completes each stage 5 times ("5 strings" in each course of fire).
  • Ammo requirement - minimum 125 rounds (5 stages X 5 plates per stage X 5 strings per stage), most competitors usually bring 150-200 rounds.

Stage procedure:

1) Upon hearing the audible start signal of the electronic timer, the competitor engages each of the 5 targets.
2) The electronic timer marks the time of each shot fired by the competitor, and the time "stops" on the last shot fired (or when the "stop" plate is hit).
3) The time is noted on the competitor's score sheet, and the competitor prepares for the next string of fire.
4) Repeat four more times for a total of 5 "strings" for that stage.
5) Add the 4 fastest "string" times to tabulate the competitor's score on the stage.
6) Move to the next stage and repeat the process.

At the end of the match, each competitor's scores are entered into a scoring program where the match winners are tabulated.

Awards (ribbons) are given to 1st-3rd place in each classification (AA, A, B, C, D, Novice)

GGarcia187 - Last month I shot in the Real World Pistol Match and it was a blast (pardon the pun). That was my first ever competition too and I was intimidated but everyone was very nice and laid back. It never felt like a competition or tournament. Bring your equipment and shoot; trust me, you won't regret it.

Thanks guys! I will definitely be there to at least watch. I really don't have much gear yet. Except for a TON of pistols. So I'm curious to see what type holster, belt, and amount of magazines I will need. Looking forward to watching the fun. I will definitely join the next one!

I have never shot competition ever. Actually a little intimidated to jump into something I have never even seen before. If I don't shoot, can I go to just watch? Is it open to the public to just spectate?

Are the plates calibrated to a specifc calibre/bullet weight combo? I.E. will a 115 grain 9mm knock them over fairly consistantly?

This sounds like a lot of fun. I've wanted to try it for some time. What type of holster is required? And since I've never shot steel plates, but have been a target shooter for awhile, what is the requirement to be called a novice?

    •  I've gotta say, everyone has got to try this at least once, but i found that if you didn't have a long barrel gun or one of those fancy setups w/ the red-dot optical sight, it was going to be a long day. With a regular production gun, this was a very difficult, and often a frustrating challenge. I liked it, but i'll stick w/ IDPA or USPSA shoots from now on. DPC members were really friendly and helpful, however. Thanks Steve for the opportunity to shoot there as your guests.
    •  Nice people and enjoyed the shooting!
    •  This was an interesting type of match that I had never tried before. Having now tried it, I think that personally I would rather shoot IDPA style matches. But this steel match would be a good way for begineers to shoot a match without having to worry about movement and cover. It would also be a good type of match for people with mobility issues, as there is no movement while shooting. I had a good time, and the people running the match were patient and courteous to the large group of MeetUp novices :)

Had a great time, was good to put some names to faces from the group.
    •  I had a good time but it was also a very humbling experience. For anyone who has never participated in this event DO NOT use a sub-compact, lol. That advice comes from personal experience. I think before I shoot this event again I will have to purchase a nice target .22 caliber pistol. The staff at Dallas Pistol Club are top notch. Friendly, easy going, and always watching out for everyone's safety.
    •  SOOOO much fun! I shot my .22 with standard pistol sights and it was great training. Will DEFINITELY be doing this event again!
    •  Fun time shooting Steel Plates. Lot of people showed up so things moved a bit slow. Good time overall.
