Interested in starting in trying competition pistol shooting but never done it before?

Then this class if for you!

Our member Rick, a competition shooter himself, will be offering a class on the Intro to IDPA shooting. Please note this class is truly for the beginner interested in learning about the sport.

Class meets at 9, will run about 3-4 hours, and will also include watching a bit of a competition going on that day to see how it is done before doing it in class.

What will be covered in class:

--Basic safety procedures
--Rules
--Equipment allowed by rules and needed to compete
--Scoring and categories for competition / how it works
--And More!

What you'll need for class:

--$15 *CASH* (This goes to the range to cover the cost of range time and supplies such as targets
--100 rounds of ammo
--Pistol (let me know if you don't own one and we may be able to have a loaner on hand for you)
--Eye and ear protection
--Appropriate clothing for the weather

Please note the space for this class is extremely limited. Accordingly, please do not RSVP yes and then not attend thus keeping others from attending.

Directions to the range: Please see Rick's note below in the comments section before checking out this link. http://jacobsplain.co...

Hondaciv - you can show up at any IDPA match and compete. If it's a 'true' IDPA sanctioned event, you can compete once and then you have to join the IDPA org. You can compete as a beginner, but then you'll need to 'classify' for future events. OR, you can go to IDPA-like events that are not IDPA sacntioned but similar and compete without joining the org. There is an IDPA event tomorrow Vince is going to and there are events Sunday nights at DFW range I'll be putting on the calendar soon.

Thanks for the class Rick. I enjoyed it. So whats the next stage? If I want to actually participate, I assume I sign up somewhere? And then am I instantly shooting against people that we saw there today? I would love to shoot a full on, but "pretend" IDPA-style shoot so that I can get a real feel for it.

I ended up using my outside the waistband Paddle holsters for my CZ-75B and my Glock 23. If we do another IDPA event, I think I will try my Taurus PT92 in 9mm. Thank you, Michael and Rick, for setting up this Intro class! I had a blast. Rick mentioned a new IDPA range will be opening in Denton in Spring 2009. I definitely want more info on that, since that's in my backyard (I live near TWU, where I work).

From my experience many people in IDPA will use an outside-waist-band holster and simply use the 'cover garment' rule to hide it. Unless you've got experience SAFELY drawing from an Inside-waist-band holster (which we did have a class on a couple weeks back on a Wednesday night) I would recommend against it.

Since we're all newbies, I guess holster type doesn't matter, since new IDPA shooters usually start from the "low ready" position, but should I bring a paddle holster or my regular carry IWB? I'll bring both, I guess, and then see what you recommend.

Keep an eye on the weather. It will be a bit chilly Saturday morning. (That's probably the real reason Patricia backed out! ;-) Just kidding!) Make sure you dress accordingly. For those that do come out, we will have a fun time. After we get all the basics out of the way, we will set up a few stages of our own so you can get a real feel for it.

For those of you who take the class and like it. The next day there will be an IDPA match at APG not too far from where the class was. http://www.meetup.com/Dalla...

There appears to be an issue with the map on JPGC?s web site. When it first comes up, it points to the correct location for the range. If you try to get directions, it changes and leads you to the wrong location. To make sure everyone finds the range, use the map as a reference put follow the written directions. Or, use Mapquest. It works.

Looks like we will have a good class. I am looking forward to meeting all of you and hopefully to help you better understand what IDPA is all about.

Beiruty, Michael is correct. If you have competed before, you will not find this class very challenging.

Hi Dean - please get with Rick on the possibility of a loaner pistol. You'll need to purchase the ammo through him as his guns run a specific ammo.

Beiruty - I know you've competed before. This class may be a bit to beginner for you.

I may be there. I RSVP Yes and would love to go. However, the visibility looking 3 weeks in the future is cloudy and as "Mist" is in the forecast, as such, my RSVP could change. Beiruty

I live in Plano and will be leaving for the range that day at about 0730am if anyone would like to car pool.

Rick was a very patient and thorough teacher, with a proper emphasis on safety. After reviewing IPDA rules, we then observed experienced shooters, and before very long, we were up and shooting our own scenarios!! It was so different from regular old target shooting, and a whole lot more fun. I now have a much better understanding of what I will need to compete in an actual IDPA match, and I was overjoyed to learn from Rick that a new range for IDPA will be opening up in the Spring in my home town of Denton, Texas. I'm SO going to be there when it does. I usually shoot at Quail Creek Gun Range in Roanoke, TX (closest I know of to Denton), and the nearest indoor range is Plano's Bullet Trap. But thanks to Rick, I'll be on the lookout for the IDPA range in Denton next Spring! I had a great day out and it was my first time with the Dallas group; everyone was polite and interested in the sport. Look forward to more events like this.

Thank you Rick for taking time out of your busy schedule to lead this class!! If this class is offered again, we would recommend it to anyone. Normal Target shooting doesn't even compare to this type of shooting in preparing the average person for self-defense situations. We learned more about our capabilities in this one class than all of our range-days combined. Tanya and Wendell
    •  Good class. WAY too cold!
