Building an App for Children

You are going to want to listen to Preston McCauley talk about some of his lessons learned, while he built the Project Storytime app for the iPad.  Project Storytime allow parents to create and Read stories with this children on an iPad© using some cool features built into the Project Storytime app.

Project Storytime is an interactive story creation experience between a parent and child.  When Preston designed this app, several iterations of usability testing were done with his own children.  The kids found defects, asked for new features, and made new requirements for their dad. While it sounds like a romping good time, it might have more stressful coming from his own kids.

Preston runs the UI Design Guide and lives in a world on concept testing and rapid prototyping.  Preston has been a speaker at Big Design Conference and the Dallas User Experience Group.

We are back at Improving Enterprises for this month's meeting.  A very special thanks to Melissa Meeker for hosting us.

I'm so bummed that I missed this, since I'm a kids app developer. I just joined the group. Are there any other Kids App developers here in Dallas?

Just saw an email notification about a change of venue for tonight's meetup. Yet the location address on this page has not changed. What's that all about?

    March 28, 2013

    • Tony C.

David--same place. Subtle address change for any GPS or Google Maps peeps who don't know where it is. It's Meetup's error -- they had an inaccurate address in the system.

Sorry, David. The Improving Enterprises people caught it for me. They moved over a year ago into a spacious place. It is just a short trip up from the old location.

Sad that I missed you at the event, had to do some freelance work. Classroom objectives compared to real office and contract work seems like a breeze now lol

Preston describes a business model that we're all going to have to learn more about. We know that we're well past the days of taking a job for a lifetime. Now we're entering the next part of that evolution - e.g., there might be larger gaps between jobs so how do you survive or better yet - thrive? Part of the answer is to build your own brand (be a "business of one", to borrow a phrase) and diversify your activity into different avenues. You'll be better connected, learn more, see more, and adapt more quickly. Preston demonstrated not just his product, which is very well conceived and developed, but more importantly, how to create a team, rally to a singular focus and purpose, and then be on a roller coaster ride. Sure there are big challenges and days where you might entertain that it's not worth it, but most won't get a lot of opportunities to do this kind of thing in their lives. Plus, he made it look so easy... Huge win, Preston, and we can't wait to see what you do next!

A combination of both, and a lot of insight from other testers across the virtual space. A lot of watching the interaction. Testing is a hard thing in the short amount of time we had available.

    • Preston M.

J always happy to discuss projects - I would like to do a presentation at some point (maybe Big D) - "Ideas" are just the beginning - building an app - building a company - Something along those lines:)

      February 26, 2013

  • Andy S.

If Preston did it, it's going to be interesting. Can't wait!
