FOFKids Service League: Keep litter out of White Rock Creek at Valley View Park

This is a recurring opportunity to earn 10 Sagan Stars.   Every month after the Fellowship of Freethought Gathering, FOFKids Service League will  help out the community and protect our waterways by cleaning up a nearby park, just one mile down the road(NOT Churchill which is adjacent to the Rec Center).

Valley View is a neighborhood park that has a whole lot of traffic over the weekends.  Unfortunately, lots of litter has been blowing into nearby White Rock Creek after the busy weekends, before the Parks Dept. can get it all cleaned up.  We may be cleaning the litter in one area of DFW but we are helping to protect ALL of the water ways by keeping trash from washing and blowing into them. Here is a Map from the Gathering to Valley View Park.

Parents/Guardians are responsible for transportation of child, and must attend. Trash bags and gloves will be provided.  Please bring a grabber/picker if you have one! Remember to RSVP and....Remember to see Miss Roddi to be sure your Sagan Stars are added to your profile.

Here is some information about the FOFKids Service League:

FOF Kids Service League

A valuable opportunity for kids to volunteer & make connections with like minded friends as they go through the important developmental steps of learning to serve and give.

FAQ:

What age should a kid be to be in the Service League?  4 years to 17 years

How do we sign up?  To sign up your child, simply RSVP to an FOF event labeled "FOFKids Service League". Answer the questions in the RSVP, and a profile for keeping track of Sagan Stars will be created.  Then come and volunteer.  Your child will be on their way to earning their shirt and unlocking prizes...and maybe learning a little and making some friends.

What are Sagan Stars? -Sagan Stars are currency for FOFKids. Each time a kid does a volunteer project or event, they earn Sagan Stars. They can save them up to "buy" prizes from the Prize Showcase.

What are some of the prizes? -Prizes range in value from 1 Sagan Star to 30 Sagan Stars. Kids can choose from things like candy, stickers, toy cars, craft sets, science sets, lego sets, games, and GIFT CARDS to places like Gamestop and ToysRus.

Can prizes be earned immediately? -No. FOFKids must first earn enough Stars (20), to get their FOFKids Shirt, to UNLOCK the prize showcase. They can then start earning and saving stars to use as currency to buy prizes.

Are kids required to attend volunteer events to earn Sagan Stars? - No. There will be plenty of at home activities that FOFKids can do to give to the community, and be of service.

Will there be regular activities with FOFKids? - Yes. Starting this Fall, there will be a volunteer event following the FOF Gathering which is the third Sunday of each month. We are adopting a City of Dallas Park. After we eat lunch, FOFKids and their families can go to nearby Valley View Park to pick up litter. Also, we will have plenty of set up and take down jobs for FOFKids Service League at our monthly gathering. Teens will have the chance to earn Sagan Stars by helping out with youngers and will have plenty of ongoing opportunities to serve (and earn stars!). Several Holiday outreach activities are in the works.

What about parents/guardians and transportation? - A Parent/Guardian is required to attend with their child and provide transportation to and from service events.

What is the cost? -FOFKids Service League is a program that is free to all children and teens who would like to serve and experience the fun of volunteerism.  We ask that the community and parents support our efforts with gift cards and toys and treats for the Prize Showcase.

Will someone help kids keep track of how many Sagan Stars each service league member has earned? -Yes. Each child will have a profile where Sagan Stars are added, saved, and adjusted as they are spent.

Can kids who require service hours for scholarship or organizations such as National Honors Society earn them by participating in FOFKids Service League?   Yes, a letter confirming service hours with FOFDallas (a non profit outreach group)will be provided upon request.

How long has FOFKids been around? -FOFKids Service League is a brand new program. As time goes by it continues to grow and develop. Questions, concerns, and input are always welcome. They can be directed to the FOFDallas Youth Director.

What about giving? -FOFKids will have the opportunity to donate prizes they have traded for Sagan Stars to our ongoing Crisis Outreach and HolidayToy Drives.

How to Support FOFKids Service League:

*Donate gift cards for $5 -$10 to places that would interest a hard working kid. Book Stores, Toy stores, Pizza delivery, GameStop, etc.

*Donate new items for prizes. Think of the bday present stash that you put away, but they grew out of before you could get it to them..think of the holiday gifts that weren't the favorite and remain unused...look for clearance items that could still be enjoyed, even if they aren't the latest thing.

*Volunteer: Sign up to be an adult attendant for Service League volunteer events

*Serve on the Children's Council or as a Sunday School Teacher or Child Care provider for Gatherings.

*Inform FOFDallas if you have any volunteer/service ideas or opportunities for our kids.

*PARTICIPATE IN FOFKids SERVICE LEAGUE ACTIVITIES AND EFFORTS

*Serve with your child after a Gathering my washing dishes, or doing the tear down, or helping the Sunday School clean up and load the supply boxes.
