Official Morning Spring Creek Forest Trout Lily Walk

Please join us for the official Spring Creek Forest Trout Lily walk sponsored by the city of Garland. The walks will be led by Tom Frey, city landscape architect and asst. Parks Director.

2 Tours Led by Tour Guide

  1. 10 AM
    1 PM

Both walks are generally well attended. If sunshine is expected there will be an above average size crowd. This is a public event. In the event of freezing/rainy weather there will still be a large crowd where you can actually hear the tour guide so don't cancel if the weather is cold/rainey. It is just as fun if not more.

Dogs must stay ON LEASH and ON PATH.

CITY INFO

Tom Frey, Landscape Architect for the Garland Parks and Recreation Department, leads participants through Spring Creek Forest to see the Trout Lily (Erythronium albidum), one of our earliest spring wildflowers to appear in rich woods and slopes. Its natural habitat is found on gentle slopes in bottom land hardwood forests. The flowering period is only two to four weeks and its above-ground life cycle for this bulb is completed in about 10 weeks. The leaf patterns resemble the skin of brook and rainbow trout and the flower is a beautiful white with occasional lavender or blue. Tom presents a fascinating account of the history of Spring Creek including forest ecology, how early cultures used the forest, and visions of its future.

It doesn't matter; this is a public event, put on by another group.

Google maps satellite image only shows about 27 parking spaces. How is this going to work?

    1 · February 22, 2013

    • Pooua

That's a good point. The answer is: it gets really crowded in that parking lot! You could park in one of the other lots and walk in. I doubt that car pooling is going to cut the crowd much. At least they don't have half the lot closed off with construction, like last year. I'm sure it is going to be interesting in the morning session, though. The afternoon session is crowded enough!

I am living on the Oklahoma border now in Gainesville since I couldn't find a job in Dallas (2 hours away) and I work weekends so please don't expect me to be at the hike. Tom Frey does a GREAT job of leading the hike every year!!! I am so sad I can't be there.

    Holy cow, a hundred people!!
I did this walk in the early 80's along a slightly different section with Dallas naturist Ned Fritz leading it when it was on private land that went up for development for all those houses out there.
We had 20 people back then and it seemed like a whole lot.
Amazing how times change, but some things remain the same.
I am glad that the lilies are still there and hope to see one, again.

This hike is every Saturday :) I haven't been in a while, but I'm looking forward to getting out again this summer. I'm passing this along to my brother who just moved to Garland. DD - Will there be kayaking or dogs on this tour?
