Houston DanceSport Meetup is Houston's pathway to the world of ballroom and Latin dancing! Open to all adults in the Houston metro area, amateur or pro, regardless of proficiency, ethnicity, gender, or marital status. In addition to promoting dance lessons, we will often promote practice socials at various dance studios in the area, and plans to encourage members to participate in, or watch competitions and performances.
"Ballroom Dance" refers to a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both socially and competitively around the world. Because of its performance and entertainment aspects, ballroom dance is also widely enjoyed to almost any type of social dancing as recreation. However, with the emergence of dancesport (competitive dance) in modern times, the term has become narrower in scope. It usually refers to the International Standard and International Latin style dances that were developed in England. In the United States, two additional variations are popular: American Smooth and American Rhythm.

Originally the group had the working title "Houston Ballroom Dance Meetup," the term "Ballroom Dance" seemed a bit archaic and evokes images as an activity for the elderly and may alienate some potential members. It was replaced with "DanceSport" to modernize the image of ballroom dance which includes competitive dancing; and to promote the International Style. Not to mention, it was formed just in time for the Olympics next month as there has been a long movement to include dancesport in the Olympics, but it will not be included in this year's Olympics in London, or the years 2016 or 2020.
