I'm in.  I'd like to get together for dinner beforehand as well.  So count me in.

Hey dancers - here's a new dance-your-ass-off meetup for June 28 at Ashkenaz:
http://worldmusic.meetup.com/45/calendar/7881252/

I just went to Ashkenaz last Saturday to see the Caribbean All-Stars, and I danced my ass off and had a blast.  For all you 40-something women who love to dance but don't feel comfortable at teenybopper clubs anymore, this is the place for us!

The crowd is genuinely friendly, unpretentious, and filled with gorgeous African men who love to dance with grown-up women.  ;)

Jessica

Announcing a new meeting for Bay Area World Music Meetup!

What: Live West African music: Kotoja @ Ashkenaz (Berkeley)

When: Saturday, June 28, 9:00 PM

Where: Click the link below to find out!

Who should come: Anyone who's a fan of West African music, or just want to check it out for the first time with some new friends!

Meeting Description: Let's have another fun evening of world music and dance at Ashkenaz! On Saturday June 28th, Kotoja will be headlining what will be a very high-energy show. Doors open @ 9pm and there is a dance lesson at that time. The live music starts @ 9:30.

Who's interested in meeting for dinner, say 8:00, before the show? Pyramid Brewery is very nearby (901 Gilman Street), and they have a fairly broad menu. If you RSVP, please indicate whether you'd like to join for dinner, so I can get a headcount.

You can listen to some of Kotoja's songs at the link below. The samples are about 1mb each, so the easiest way is to right-click on the 'speaker' icons, and "save target as". (sorry, that's the extent of my tech support capabilities!)

Hope to see you there! Here's a bio for the band, taken from Ashkenaz's website (www.ashkenaz.com):

The Bay Areas leader in the World Beat and Afrobeat scene, Kotoja was created by Nigerian singer-bassist Bab? Ken Okulolo and features bandmembers from West Africa and America playing a bubbling brew of African highlife, juju, jazz, and world dance rhythms with driving guitars, riffing horns, and persuasive percussion. New York clothier Dan Storper was so moved by a Kotoja concert in Golden Gate Park a decade back that he started the popular Putumayo record company, whose many releases (including the latest Kotoja CD, "Super Sawale") feature positive, uplifting music from around the world in the spirit of Kotoja. "We see the world as one family," Okulolo says of Kotoja?s style. 'Our music expresses this message."
