4th Guru Meetup

Hi Gurus,

sorry for the extensive delay, I had writers' block again. On the bright-side though, I now have 7 semi-finished topics ready for future events, and have also discovered lots of completely unrelated youtube videos :D

Now though, I would like to propose the following topic for our next discussion,

Meritocracy

This is the "zeitgeist" of our age, and considered one of the engines of capitalism, as well as one of it's benefits.

It rewards those with talent based solely on their achievements, and does not discriminate on race, sex, or religion.

On the other hand, Meritocracy justifies social inequality and is a form of social darwinism, where only the strong survive.

A Meritocracy requires equality of opportunity for it to work effectively, yet the rewards gained are used to provide advantages of opportunity for friends and family.

In effect the pyramid of Merit comes to mirror the pyramid of Wealth and cultural capital.

    Here's a different take on meritocracy: http://www.philosophersmail.com/hierarchy/the-evils-of-meritocracy/
    ——
"In a meritocratic age, an element of justice enters into the distribution of wealth, but also of poverty. Low status comes to seem not merely regrettable, but also deserved."

Hi guys! Here is the website I was talking about: http://medium.com. Feel free to browse and read around. It's a nice platform where everyone is free to write and publish. I also created a collection (https://medium.com/practical-philosophy) that we can all follow and post to. So we could pool our write-ups together.

Don't be afraid to write... even if you don't consider yourself a writer. All essays are welcome. And you can easily cross-post if you already have a blog.

Hey Rob, both times are good for me, but perhaps you can set up a poll (under the "More" category) and get people to vote for their preferred times? Then send out an email so people will be aware too :) Cheers

    Hi guys,
I just created an event on our Expats Group, and I had an after-thought that, given the theme, some of you also might be interested... If not, sorry both bothering you :D

    Nice topic. I'm there!

lovely topic sean... might we also include elitist schooling systems across the world that alienate children based on pre existing social status and wealth of their parents, therein, attempting to reinforce a cycle of status quo elitism?

    2 · February 24, 2014

  • Sean

    ...continued....

If you believe in a system based on Merit, would you endorse John Stuart Mill's suggestion that "we should give more votes to the more educated voter", due to the "recognition that some opinions are worth more than others"?

Is the world anymore meritocratic now than it was in the past? And if so, does the widening gap between rich and poor in Western countries point to it's decline?

Finally, are there better systems of reward, and what exactly are the rewards we talk of? Money and Recognition?
