That's a fair assessment Ellery. But if someone is publicly being hostile to a new member I feel the need to defend the new member publicly and say publicly that it's not OK. What do you think about that?

I certainly do not think that suspicion of a troll or a trouble maker was an unreasonable concern at all....but at the same time, with the amount of data at that time...I was not sure if she was just a bit edgy, confused, miscommunicating or something....

I think of myself 5 years ago and I probably when discussing such topics on the internet would have had to put my foot in my mouth a great number of times...and I suppose I will do it again in the future (hopefully less though :D ).

it was reasonable to have suspicion based on percieved tone and content she provided from the get go...I too was like "huh?" to be honest...but I wanted to get in her head and see if some ability to reason would pour out personally....in reviewing now her posts on yahoo and some other sights, going on historical data, my assessment now is that it appears rather unlikely.

My only criticism then I suppose is that perhaps a PM to potentially combative persons opening up a dialogue in private to see if "anybody is home".....

The group message calling her out was a bit much for my taste (personally) - then everyone chimed in and it felt like bashing rather than trying to feel her out.

My suspicion now wade, is that you were already quite certain of the outcome and you were trolling her to be combative.

I will say this after reading a bunch of her posts online...I feel bad for the person...there is a passionate person in there that may very well have a skeptic in them that is worth nurturing...she may have emotional problems, psychological problems....etc...in looking at her posts, i do not think she is a troll...I just think she is a rather confused person...a bit angry-ish in her communication style.....and I have little doubts now that she would generate some group conflict be it in text or in person....that fascinates me a bit if I am being honest....but I can recognize the concerns for negative effects.

So yeah, there was a bit originally that we went on, but not much...then we went from "hmm" to "SLAP!".....but ad hoc now, it appears legit....I just would PM folks....and if I act a fool ever and piss some folks off, I humbly request a PM :D

I reviewed Raven's messages too, and I don't think we over-reacted. Her first comment to another new member was: "What religion? You should know better than to bring that up here." That comment might be ok between two friends. But for one new member to say that to another new member is hostile and rude. I don't want new members getting a bad impression of us by reading emails like this before they ever come to a meetup. I think we should confront things like this, and if the behavior does not improve we have to cancel their membership. Keep in mind that Raven is a member of 210 meet ups. How many do you think she attends regularly? I suspect she was just planning to be a member on-line and not face to face.

I had a feeling about that - my antennae went up with the first couple of messages even though technically the guys are correct, we kind of singled her out without a lot of concrete proof of hostility. I am happy to find out my instincts were correct. I had been wondering if there was a way to figure out if this was a pattern with her. So simple and I never thought of it.  Thanks for doing that, Nicole.

A quick google search of Raven's email address will show you she has a history of being hostile and rude to others in online message boards.
