Intro to R Workshop

For our second educational event, we are holding an introductory workshop to the R statistical programming language on Saturday, June 15th.  By the end of the workshop, you will have gained a basic understanding of reading, plotting, munging, and modeling data with R.

The price per attendee is $150.

What To Bring:

  • Your laptop with R installed (you can download it here)
  • RStudio to make R a bit easier to use
  • Printed copy of your ticket

Objective:

Being able to initiate a data analysis project using R and do some basic analyses.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to read data from several data sources
  • How to visualize data by creating different types of plots
  • How to munge and summarize data
  • Some basic modeling techniques

Agenda

Starting a Project

  • Loading Data into R
  • Data Aggregation and Summarization
  • Creating New Variables

Finding Patterns in Data

  • Creating Plots
  • Exporting Plots for Reporting
  • Basic Hypothesis Testing

Modeling Data

  • Linear Regression
  • Formula Interface
  • Summarizing Results

Q & A

Please bring your questions. I want the last part of the workshop to be devoted to answering questions you might have about using R for data analysis.

    Hi folks!

Just wanted to let the group know that we have scheduled the R workshop for advanced beginners that a few of you had asked about for October 19th. It is the event titled R Statistical Programming Basics II on the main Data Community DC meetup page, and it picks up where this workshop left off. Check it out and sign up if you're interested. This is a great way to build on what you learned in the first class. Hope to see you there!

Abhijit - Thanks for the useful intro class. Please let us know when the class notes /slides are there! (I know you said Monday :-) )

It'll probably be late tonight our early tomorrow.

While my programming skills are very rusty, I felt that this was a good introduction to R programming language.

I'm so sorry! I'm going to have to cancel. I will not make it in time. I understand I won't get a refund...consider it a DC2 donation. Keep these great Meet Ups coming!

The instructor will post all the slides and resources... Hopefully you will benefit from those.

It was OK. It was good to get back into R but a little tough to get my feet under me. I was late arriving which most likely hindered my learning experience. I would have like to have spent more time on simpler items as this was an Intro class, such as downloading packages, which yes is basic, but it is the very start of being able to use R. Without that no one can move forward. But the forward features were very good, and it made me consider many new ways that R could be used in my work environment. It did and will help me.

Useful but too short. The 9 am - 2 pm ( instead of 12 would've worked better)

Agreed. Great workshop but let's make it a few hours longer next time.

For those that are driving tomorrow and wondering where is the best place to park, your best bet is the Ballston Public Parking Garage (http://www.arlingtonva.us/Departments/EnvironmentalServices/dot/traffic/parking/EnvironmentalServicesBallston.aspx). It's a few blocks from where the workshop will be, it's open 24 hours (some of the other garages open at 10am on weekends), there is no time limit to worry about, and the rates are very affordable. See you guys tomorrow!

$150 for a 3-hour intro to R? I'm amazed you have any attendees at all. Is it really that hard for people to get through an online tutorial?

Per the instructor - here are the packages to install..

    http://files.meetup.com/6996692/initialize.R

Instructions : "Run this file from within R using source("/path/to/initialize.R"), replacing "/path/to" with the path where you downloaded the file."

    June 14, 2013

  • Dave S.

Yes, are there any particular packages that we should download.

The instructor, Abhijit, will send out an email (supposedly later today). To quote : "I'll send a file "initialize.R" which will install several packages that we will use for the workshop."

In the interests of saving time (and not using 2 hours out of the 4 hours we have on installs) - please could you repeat the software pre-reqs. I have installed "R", and "R Studio".. Are there any data sets to be downloaded?

Unfortunately, i am out of town. But definitely would like to follow the next session.

I will be out of town. Otherwise, I would definitely be attending. I'll just have to wait for the next opportunity.

    June 3, 2013

  • Dave S.

I am ready to go, sounds exciting.

    June 2, 2013

  • Ayah Z.

Is there any special rate for students who cannot afford it and would like to attend?

    May 27, 2013

    • Tony O.

We currently don't have the ability to charge different amounts to different people. I would recommend going the route of online resources - MOOCs, tutorials, etc. - if cost is an issue.

      Thank you
