6.30 Say Hi, free pizza+beer

“Geo-Spotting: Mining Online Location-based Services for Optimal Retail Store Placement” by Dmytro Karamshuk, Researcher @ Kings College. In this talk Dymtro will show the predictive power of various machine learning features on the popularity of retail stores in the city through the use of a dataset collected from Foursquare in New York. The features datamined are based on two general signals: geographic and user mobility. He’ll show that the best performing features are common across the three different commercial chains considered in  his analysis, and that performance improves significantly when combining multiple features in supervised learning algorithms. Dymtro is a Researcher in computer science and engineering at King's College London. Currently doing research in data mining, complex networks, human mobility, mobile networks.

Beer break + community update

“Scalable scraping with machine learning” by Eddie Bell & Jonathan Heusser, Data Scientists @Lyst. Web scraping is an integral part of modern data acquisition. At Lyst we run hundreds of scrapers in parallel and scrape millions of pages each day. In this talk we will explain how we built a robust and scalable scraping architecture with the help of machine learning. Eddie and Jonathan are ex finance people who saw the light and joined the start-up community. They are data scientists at Lyst and run the team responsible for data acquisition, monitoring and analysis.

Very interesting talks, even if it was mainly stuffs that I can't apply on a daily basis it is still interesting to see what crazy things people can do with data!

I don't think the event was recorded (though it is possible I just didn't notice a camera). I expect slides will appear on http://datasciencelondon.org/ at some point.

    PS Great talks, thanks.

    Sorry to have missed it.

Thank you very much for your talks and for the organization of the event. I enjoyed it, and I found the talks very interesting and inspiring. If I remember well, it has been said that the slides are going to be uploaded: are they already online?

  • Nick H.

    Thanks for the great talks.

Regarding waiting lists, I did notice that up to 10% of seats weren't filled. If this continues, maybe you could oversubscribe the venue accordingly to help get a few more people in?

No chance this was recorded by chance?

For me this was one of the most helpful seminars I have attended for a long time.
So rarely get to hear from experts who work with similar systems to myself and the guys from Lyst were clearly very knowledgeable and innovative in the area of web scraping.

didnt attend because I was on waiting list

    October 24, 2013

the attendee list and waiting list are automatically generated by the meetup system. It seems you were in waiting list and as some people cancelled you ended up in the attendee list generated by the system.

I hope a ticket gets released v soon as I'm just around the corner!

I was on the waiting list and have just been allocated a ticket. Thank you. It works. Unfortunately, I remade my plans and will attend something else...I hope to meet you at another opportunity. I'm a digital marketer, originally from Brazil, passionate about data and analytics, growth hacking, and looking for my next job in a tech-savvy company. Have a great evening.

Unfortunately my invite (off the wait list) came 10 minutes too late - I'd just left London. Annoying - I really wanted to attend!

    Can't make it tonight unfortunately.

    October 24, 2013

    • Rajendra A.

Hi, Can you please change your RSVP, if not done already? cheers.

      October 24, 2013

    • Ranadip

Done that while posting my message! Good luck.

      October 24, 2013

  • Ghislain V.

Thought I'd never get a spot so I made other arrangements, since I was on the waiting list.

    October 24, 2013

  • Carlos

People- If you can't make it please update your status. If *you are not* in the waiting list please don't turn up at the venue and respect your peers in the waiting list. We also have EH&S regulations that we have to comply with. The building security also requires a list with the people confirmed. Check the waiting list as it moves fast as the event approaches. Thx!

I think the postcode may be wrong on the published address for tonights Meetup. New Zealand house is postcode SW1Y 4TQ
    which is at 80 Haymarket.
I'm looking forward to tonights meeting as my first meetup as it sounds very relevant to my role with responsibility for automated data gathering processes in Lloyds List Intelligence

Carlos, is it possible to make a recording of the event and put it up somewhere for those (many ) of us who couldn't get in tonight?

    October 24, 2013

Do people need to show they have reserved place at the entrance?

    October 24, 2013

  • Richard H.

    Sorry, can't make it tonight.

    October 24, 2013

  • Michael C.

I've just released my place, had some last minute client-work crop up tonight. Please share the presentations afterwards!

    October 24, 2013

So sorry to have taken a place and not used it. I'm not feeling well at all today and hopefully if I drop now someone else will be able to use my spot.

Why I always get a msg that shows only a waiting list option? How come these meetups are always fully booked even if I open the invitation as soon as I get it?

Hi Quentin, very good analysis of the Data Sccience meetup. Thank you for posting the analysis and results. Great job.

      October 23, 2013

    • Heather S.

Nice one Quentin! (My heath-robinson rig - trying to make Big Ben chime soon as the email goes out - isn't coming along very well.) p.s. I'm a totoro fan too!

      October 23, 2013

  • Francesco B.

Hello guys, any news about the availability of further free spots?

    October 23, 2013

  • Heather S.

If the talks could be taped and made avail online, without crimping speakers' style, that would lessen the pain of missing an event. My reaction time usually isn't fast enough to grab a ticket, so this would be useful for me. Taping isn't free, but I would be happy to pay a modest admission fee to free up some funds to enable this to happen.

I know it's not easy to get large venues eaily. I wonder if a different scheme could make the allocation fairer .. many people are at work and can't check their email and book a slot within 30 minutes of announcement. The current scheme seems to bias against some ...

    1 · October 18, 2013

    • Geoff H.

The cost would then be explicit rather than implicit being on a first come first served basis with no ability to trade a place.
The London Futurists now use a £5 fee to pay for the venue, this would also unfetter the talks from the needs of sponsorship.
Of course the flipside of this is the fuss from collecting the money, and ticking people off.
Carlos has done a good job, but don't forget the people who sit at the door ticking people off and having to turn people away.
Are the talks and networking worth £5? I rather think they are.

I think keeping it free make it really open and accessible for everyone including students . i wonder how many times people on the waiting list ended up being refused at the entrance . maybe we should rate the members based on their past behaviour . for instance people who consistently sign up without showing up or change their rsvp should probably be penalised a bit and receive the invitation to RSVP a day later.

Where can we get ahold of pictures taken at events?
