Gaming Community Data hackathon (Steam API)

  • Needs a date

  • Hi,

    London-based newbie/lurker here!

I was wondering if there might be any interest in a hacking session based around gaming community data exposed through the Steam Web API.

If you haven't heard of it before, Steam is a well-established cloud platform for desktop gamers. You buy games through Steam, then download them to your PC/Mac/Linux machine. Steam records achievements for each game, and exposes your games and achievements through a publicly accessible website.

I've been playing around with the Web API, and think there's potential for some neat visualizations or gamer services such as rankings or comparisons.

I've put together a simple scraper to capture game and achievement data for individual users, and I'm interested to explore what might be possible with it. For example it might be possible to generate basic rankings for groups of friends, comparison services to show how players compare with each other, or full-on game recommendation services.

I thought an informal meetup of interested parties might be a good starting point?

    Any thoughts appreciated,
    Jim

Sounds interesting ... I'm rather busy with other projects so haven't found much time to do any more with the Steam API sadly.

It would be interesting to learn more about what you've been doing. I was reading about Dota 2 tournaments in a recent issue of PC Gamer, I can imagine e-sports matches are a rich area for data analysis.

It's not strictly using the Steam API as a primary data source, but I've been doing analytics on Dota2 replays, would anyone be interested?

I just posted an article describing how to generate visualizations of steam achievement data using R. It's fairly simple, but the sample data and gamer profiles described in the article may be of interest. http://vartree.blogspot.com/2012/12/visualizing-gamer-achievement-profiles.html

I've been doing a bit of background investigation and just wrote up a blog posting about how to retrieve and process data from Steam: http://vartree.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/harvesting-data-from-steam-community-api.html

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
