  • June 28, 2012 · 7:00 PM

Note: We may open up the waiting list to 75-80 more people. Reserve your spot!

We are honored to have Dr Hadley Wickham (author of Ggplot2) take us through a hands on workshop on the basics on data visualization using R.

Dr. Wickham is visiting SF and we're incredibly lucky to have him come speak.

Come join us and please come with your computers (charged) and R loaded.

Event format:

6:30 - 7:00 pm - Pizza and beer

7:00 -8:30 pm - Workshop

8:30 -9 pm - Networking, questions

Thanks to our event and venue sponsor Trulia!

Look forward to see all of you.

Software requirements to get the most out of it -

* R 2.15, http://www.inside-r.org/download

* Rstudio desktop, http://rstudio.org/download/desktop

* Once you have R and Rstudio installed, open Rstudio and run the
following code:

install.packages(c("ggplot2", "plyr", "reshape2", "stringr", "lubridate"))

* You can check everything is installed correctly by running:

library(ggplot2)
qplot(mpg, wt, data = mtcars)

    Hi,

There is a course coming up on Hadley Wickham's popular ggplot visualization package in R, in Redwood city. It is taught by the ggplot developers themselves. I am helping promoting the event.

Great introduction to ggplot2 with plenty of humor from the speaker (as well as plenty of good tips).

Really helpful to start learning how to visualize data in R!! The teaching and examples were superb.

The space is nice, it was great to have some food and drink available, and of course it was awesome to meet Hadley in person.

    Great for beginners of R!

Hadley was very engaging. I already use ggplot2 regularly, but I still learned a couple of new tricks!

Prof Hadley Wickham was a lot of fun tonight. He talked about the package ggplot2 that runs in the R.2.15 version, explained views for several outputs of R-scripts through Rstudio, graphs for different variables of 2 datasets: cars and diamonds, illustrated premature conclusions in the analysis of graphs, use of jitter to fix overplot in scatterplots, characterization of statistical distributions through mean, std, kurtosis, skewness, leptokurtic distributions and much more!

    Curiosity:
When analyzing historical returns, kurtosis helps gauge the level of risk for a stock. If the past return data yields a leptokurtic distribution, the stock will have a relatively low amount of variance, because return values are usually close to the mean. Investors who wish to avoid large, erratic swings in portfolio returns may wish to structure their investments to produce a leptokurtic distribution.

Hadley is always engaging. Thanks to the pre-meetup instructions to download relevant packages, the session ended up being really productive.

I just got confirmed, so I am going now, from Sunnyvale/mtnview. If anyone is going from near here, I can offer or share a ride. Just send me a note.

It's in a pretty good area Michelle. As long as you have a good lock, you should be fine to lock to any parking meter.

Hi! Will be biking to this event. Can you suggest any safe areas to lock-up my bike? Thanks:)

I use R on Ubuntu and Windows and the commands in Romy's message work on both platforms as is, without needing to install any external dependencies.

The commands above for installing R and those libraries are for Mac; may be different on a PC. If you are not already developing on Mac, you may need to install some dependencies. R requires a Fortran compiler, which you can get by installing xCode.

    For OSX 10.6.x:
    install xcode 3.2.3
then install gfortran (if you're using brew, just type "brew install gfortran")
    then "brew install R"
    then run R and enter
    >install.packages(c("ggplot2", "plyr", "reshape2", "stringr", "lubridate"))

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
