This month we're going to get hands on and dig into some data! We're hosting a DataDive with NYC's Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DOITT) and we're calling all data scientists to volunteer for the weekend of September 7th to help do good along side fellow data scientists and members from the Parks Department!

All of the event details are on the sign up page here so be sure to register before it fills up!

We hope to see you there!

Hey DataKind members! This DataDive event was an amazing experience for my team. We are used to working with the NYC Open Data Portal, where over 800 datasets sit mostly underused, as there is no one to explain the domain behind them. At this event Department of Parks people and Data Ambassadors from DataKind created such a bridge which allowed us to build an app in less then 24 hours (a shameless plug: it is evolving live at
That said, even after Data Ambassodors massaged the data for us prior to the event, the data were missing primary keys (by which to join), they had unclear coding, many columns had mixed values with multiple semantics. Most people at the event spent more time fighting the data than building something useful. Still impressive results, if you ask me, as BigApps contest gives 3 months and here we got one day, which is a tribute to organizers of the event, thank you guys! DataDive concept is a winner, let's make next DataDive even better.

Hi, am I supposed to be there Friday 7 at 7pm, for registration or similar, or may I join you later the same day or the following day?

Hi Silvia, if you cannot make it on Friday between 7-9pm then if possible it would be great for you to show up saturday at 9am. That way you can get a recap about the problems we are working on for the day and see where you might want to pitch in your skills.
