Experienced Crew (Can sail a boat if they want or need to)
Crew (Have enough sailing experience and knowledge to help sail)
Novice Crew (Want to learn how to help on a sailboat - want to improve sailing skills)
Casual (Like to be on the water - along for the ride - want to try it out )
We're for those who want to try sailing and / or those who are very serious about sailing. You can be a 'casual' sailor who just enjoys being on or near the water or an 'old salt' who'll take on any race or any weather. You can own a boat or wish you did (or didn't).
If you've never experienced the feeling of a warm breeze propelling a small sailboat across the waters of a beautiful lake, here's your chance and here's your opportunity to meet people who have an interest in sailing.
We sail small boats on beautiful Chautauqua Lake and make occasional trips to the Finger Lakes and the Adirondacks. We visit the Chautauqua Institution via sailboat for lunch and ice cream and have privileges at several western New York yacht clubs for lunch or dinner. We sail the larger boats from the Buffalo harbor on Lake Erie and Wilson and Olcott harbors on Lake Ontario.
Our 'meetups' are open to all members but we often must limit attendance to meet the size of the boat and the conditions.
We are not a business that teaches sailing, gives lessons, or issues certificates. We will be glad to share our knowledge, show you how we sail, let you handle our boats but we are not formal "instructors". We are not a business or a not-for-profit organization. We're just nice people helping nice people.
"Donation is $20-$50 for a day of sailing or on-ground information sharing session. The donation amount will be listed for each event. Your donation helps to offset the cost of wear and tear on the equipment and fuel to get the larger boats out of the slips and into the wind. We keep track of donations and expenses to make sure nothing is left over to be taxed.
A small sailboat can cost up to $3,000 a year to maintain, dock and store. A large boat can cost $5,000 - $10,000 a year.
Sailing is an active sport. To crew (help) on a sailboat one needs to be in reasonable physical condition; able to climb in and out of boats, move quickly as necessary, be alert, able to follow direction, not prone to sea sickness, etc.. As with any sport there is always a risk of injury or worse. Participants must execute a waiver of responsibility.
When on the water, for safety of all, participants must obey the commands of the captain of the boat. Safe sailing is not done by committee decisions.
We love pets and have our own but for reasons regarding safety, pets are not allowed on meetups.
Members must post a clear photo of their face on the website or send a photo privately to the organizer. Last names are not required - initial will suffice. Others members may want to know who they are getting on a boat with. At the same time we want to do all we can to prevent photos and identity from being misused.
Dues are $10 per year - $.84 a month. Dues are used to help cover the cost of this web page - it is not free.
