Winter Park and the Mennello American Folk Art Museum

Sunday June 30, 2013
Winter Park and the Mennello American Folk Art Museum
The Cornell Fine Arts Museum is the only teaching museum in the greater Orlando area. Its encyclopedic collection totals over 5,000 objects ranging from antiquity through contemporary, including rare Old Master paintings and a comprehensive collection of prints, drawings and photographs. The Cornell is located on the campus of Rollins College near downtown Winter Park. The Mennello Museum is the first venue to showcase the new traveling exhibition based on the memoirs of Rob Storter [masked]), which were published in 2000 as the book “Crackers in the Glade.” Storter came from a family of early settlers in the village of Everglade. He was a self-taught artist and sketched pictures of his rural lifestyle and environment, and annotated them with stories, often bemoaning the wilderness that was being lost to development. The history of American Indians in Florida spans some 16,000 years, though the number of tribes significantly decreased following Ponce de Leon’s voyage to Florida in 1513. In the centuries that followed, survivors of decimated populations banded together, including the Seminole that lived in the Everglades. Amassed over 35 years, the Reeves collection includes clothing, jewelry and photographs that tell the story of the Seminole, described by early explorer William Bartram as “proud of their valor … haughty in their dealings with strangers … and arrogant in their fierce determination to rule their own land or die in the attempt… .” The area around Park Avenue and Winter Park are noted for a bevy of restaurants (Trip Advisor lists 228 choices). Rated # 2 is Ethos Vegan on New York Avenue noted for exceptional soups, salads and sandwiches. Burger Fi and nearby and Park Plaza Gardens are across the street from each other on scenic Park Avenue.
