♣ 2nd annual Go Green ! St. Patrick's Day Hike at Bill Yeck Park (moderate pace)

Last year was so much fun, let's do it again...

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day and the upcoming arrival of spring with a 4 mile moderate pace hike at Bill Yeck Park.

Wear green. Dayton Hikers or "Life is Better on the Buckeye Trail" shirts if you have them!

We will hike the yellow and brown loops for a total of four miles. Bring water and hiking poles if you have them. Be prepared for possible mud on the trails.

No maybes, please RSVP only when you know you can attend this hike. The parking lot at Bill Yeck Park will not accomodate a large number of hikers.

Post-hike celebration (optional): Drinks and dinner at Doubleday's Grill and Tavern, Cross-pointe Shopping Center, Centerville. Raise a brew to the luck o' the Irish.

About the Park

Bill Yeck Park is a 194-acre natural area along 1.75 miles of Sugar Creek. The park is treasured by hikers, bird watchers, and nature enthusiasts and harbors many rare species of plant life, providing a home to a variety of animals in every season. Fossils from the Ordovician period can be found in Sugar Creek which flows through the park.  The park connects with other parks and wildlife areas creating a large corridor of green space that extends from St. Leonard Center to the Little Miami River. This unbroken wooded area makes the park's wildlife abundant and varied.

Another feature of the park is the Tri-centennial Time-Trail. Established during the Centerville-Washington Township bi-centennial in 1996, the time trail is a tract of land representing 100 years of natural succession. Each year another unmown section is added, creating a trail showing how a field turns into a forest.

The latest addition to the park is the former Victor and Mary Jane Smith property along Centerville Station Road. The 37-acre site includes a historic home and corn crib, meadow, and woods. View the Smith entrance concept plan.

The Park District offers environmental education programs for all ages throughout the year at Bill Yeck Park. Parking is available along Rooks Mill Lane, at the Wilmington-Dayton Road entrance, at the Smith entrance on Centerville Station Road, and at the adjacent Forest Field Park.

A belt swing and infant swing are located in the park at the end of Parkhaven Point.

Thank you Laura for a great event! I followed the rainbow but no gold, just that leprechaun carrying on, something about a box of cereal. Now it's midnight and I still have my muddy boots and gaiters sitting in the tub ... time to do something about that in preparation for the next DH adventure. Looking forward to St Patrick's Day Hike 3 ... only 364 days to go.

The best hike ever :-) Couldn't believe we saw a black bear and a leprechaun on the same trail! What a great group of fun people to spend St. Patrick's Day with in the woods. And the mud was an extra bonus. Post-hike cookie and the dinner at Doubleday's was a fun time as well. Thanks everyone for making it an enjoyable outing.

Just a friendly reminder that the hike leader sets the day, time, pace, route and limit of the hike. If you don't like any part of this hike then this hike is not for you and now is a good time to change your RSVP to no. Hike leaders are volunteers. They spend their time, energy and money to lead hikes for you. They do it for the enjoyment not the drama. Do not use the Dayton Hiker message boards to harass hike leaders. Laura does a great job leading hikes for Dayton Hikers. She is a long time hike leader. It makes me wonder why she is still interested in leading hikes after reading these rants.

Hi--I have a day job and am just able to respond.

I think it's early to start micro-managing the guest list as of today. People will drop off the list by Sunday, they always do for whatever reason. I've been leading hikes for this group for three years and can say this from lots of experience.

Yes, I limited the number due to the small parking lot and the fact some of these trails are narrow--we will naturally get strung out. I don't want to lead a large group through Yeck.

It's my decision as a hike leader to decide the details. If you don't like my plans, then don't sign up. I hate to be this way, but this isn't a group planned event. It's frustrating--and this is the second hike I've scheduled recently that has been this way. I do this for fun and to help you enjoy our trails, not for the big bucks. Please give your hike leaders some leeway and understanding...please!

I suggest carpools from Kroger at 3:40 to be proactive. I will add all from the Wait list to the hike.

I know where you are coming from and I have this problem too! We are both too popular! LOL! People will drop and will probably get back down to 20 attendees. Give the lady some slack people!

      2 · March 12

  • Patricia

Laura- I guess you are just so popular that everyone wants to go on your hikes.

    March 12

  • Laura

I suggest carpools from the Kroger store on Wilmington Pike near Alex-Bell Road at 3:40 pm. (I will not be meeting at the carpool location.)

Use the Comments to post up if you want to carpool. Thanks.
