Dayton Hikers 4th Birthday Bash and Picnic

Come and celebrate Dayton Hikers' 4th Birthday with a summer picnic at Possum Creek. Whether you've hiked three miles with the group or three hundred miles, come out and enjoy a fun evening sharing with both old and new friends.

This is the perfect night to share stories and pictures of your summer hiking adventures (we know some of you have climbed mountains) and get ideas for new trails to explore!

What to Bring:

• An appetizer, side dish, salad or dessert to share for 10 to 12 people,

• Your own plate and utensils,

• Your own Beverage (alcohol is permitted in this park).

Dayton Hikers will provide hamburgers, brats and veggie burgers for the group.

There is no cost to attend but donations will be cheerfully accepted to cover the costs as well as to support the Dayton Hikers webpage.

Help Wanted:

Cooks and people to help with set up and clean up at the shelter.

Hike leaders, if anyone wants to take a pre or post dinner walk ...there is no official hike planned for the event at this point.

Party starts at 6:00 with food starting around 6:30

Possum Creek is on Frytown Rd between Gettysburg and Rt4/Germantown Rd

There are three entrances to Possum Creek, the one to the shelters is closest to Gettysburg or to the east ... see map

A great celebration of Dayton Hikers 4th birthday! This was truly a team effort and I thank the hikers that made this possible. First, thanks to Todd for helping with the food planning and logistics, marketing and event set up, as well as mental support! Thanks to Andy for allowing us to use our DH group funds to host part of the meal. Thank you to Ruth for arriving early and helping us put the details all together. Thanks to John for his grilling expertise and taking care of cooking for everyone to enjoy. Thanks to Darlene for bringing our Trikke entertainment! And THANK YOU to everyone who attended for bringing such delicious food, from healthy fruit and veggies to yummy desserts, it was all great!

It was really a fun time. I enjoyed visiting with friends as well as the opportunity to meet some new people. Here's to another year of great friendships, getting out and living, and more adventures.

I am also going to bring a couple pounds or more worth of unsalted peanuts in the shell. I can't give peanuts to my parrot anymore (even though they were his all-time most favorite treat, but apparently are not good for parrots). And, even though I love peanuts (and yes, these are normal, from the grocery human peanuts <g>), it just breaks my heart into little bits and pieces to see Tiki beg, plead, do tricks & other antics trying to get a peanut when I get them out to eat one. They now taste like guilty sawdust to me when I try to eat them in the house. LOL So, please, everyone, have plenty. I don't want to bring them back here. I feel like 2 cents every time I try to eat a peanut. *sigh*

    August 22, 2013

    • Dawn

Okay.... I will go rewash my Confetti Rice spoon. I had set it in the bowl I was bringing for the peanuts and put the bag of peanuts on top of it. I don't want there to be any cross contamination, however minute or freakishly unlikely... I'll scrub it with chlorox water and then put it in its own baggie. <g> And, you're off the hook. You don't need to eat the peanuts.

P.S. Because I eat gluten free.... can you make sure to leave me a burger that is not seasoned (or at least not with anything other than salt/pepper). Many steak seasonings have wheat/gluten in them. Thanks!!!

    Is there a shelter? A tarp? We are backpackers...we won't melt. :-)

    August 21, 2013

    • Laura

Shelter, you won't melt. Bring your place mat and wine glass!

  • Mountain L.

Chances of scattered rain showers tomorrow during the picnic range from 30% to 40%. If it increases I may bail on this event! I will hike in the rain but eating a picnic in one is not my idea of fun! LOL!

    August 21, 2013

    • Andréa Van S.

I was looking forward to meeting you Laurel, but that sounds like a great way to spend the evening! See you soon on a hike I hope!

      August 22, 2013

    • Dawn

Laurel, you did know we have a nice shelter, right?

      August 22, 2013

  • Patty

I soooo wanted to attend and enjoy spending time with everyone. There is now an extremely slim possibility that I will be there at all. The sacrifices we have to make. Finalizing things for my daughters "Degree" graduating party which is at my house tomorrow night. Not everything is going as planned so I will need tonight to make it work. If I don't make it tonight, I will be thinking of you! Enjoy!

    August 22, 2013

  • Mountain L.

I can lead some folks on the trails if anyone wishes to hike. May be bringing both daughters. I need to talk to them first.

    August 8, 2013

    • Dawn

Why not bring Sarah & we can all distract her?

Sorry I'll miss the celebration. My oldest daughter asked me to go with her to orientation at ONU with her. She is really excited about starting college and I'm glad she askef me to go :-) See you on the trails.

    • Todd C.

Can't hold a candle to the excitement of sending someone off to college. That is so nice she asked you to go. Have fun.

      August 21, 2013

Jack, my daughter just graduated from ONU, she really enjoyed her time there and got a great education!

Whats all the talk about the weather thats what makes hiking interesting. Diane sugar does melt so i must be careful not to get wet, lol Every day is a perfect day to be out side. LETS MAKE MEMORIES.

Are we under roof if it rains (as predicted)? Not that I haven't hiked in the rain, mud, slush, snow, ice, toads, crickets, 8 more plagues . . . .

    1 · August 21, 2013

    • Mountain L.

I didn't know you hiked in plagues! Although that hike at Zaleski had a plaque of mosquitoes! LOL!

      August 21, 2013

    • Kathie H.

You must have missed the plague hike . . . . Maybe next summer.

      August 21, 2013

  • Laura

Hey hikers! Rain or shine we will have a great time. There is a large shelter so we will be protected in case it rains. Todd and I have purchased burgers, brats and veggie burgers. I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. I've had some awesome hikes in rain and wind, don't let it deter you!

I now have a personal matter to attend to before I come. So, I will basically be stopping by to chat for a little while. I will not be there at the start.

    August 21, 2013

    • Todd C.

Come on down when you can...meeting people and chatting is what this is all about.

I have an appt after work Thursday, but I'm really hoping to make it. There are so many of you I haven't met yet and this is a perfect opportunity.

    August 21, 2013

Stop by when you can, figure we'll be there until at least 9, maybe later. Park class at 10

Let the chopping begin! I made the rice this morning. It's been chillin in the fridge. Now, to commence chopping and dicing up all the bunches of fresh veggies to go in the confetti rice. I love this part. It's actually fun for me. Then, it will set up in the fridge overnight to reach full flavor... during which time I will lock myself in the basement with a timed lock on the door to keep me from raiding it. Did I mention I love any excuse to get to make this? Yummy.

If I could get a burger without any additives too that would be fantastic! (I am gluten/dairy and soy (spray oils!) free) Thanks so very much!!!

Canola oil okay? There is a little of it in the GF DF confetti rice dish I'm bringing.

      1 · August 17, 2013

    • Dawn

According to "The Internet" Canola doe snot contain soy. So, you'll be able to eat the confetti rice dish.

  • Dawn

Hey all.... hope you like confetti rice!!! I'll bring a biggie batch of the stuff. It's yum! Full of peppers, beans, onions, corn, rice, salsa, and more!! (For those to whom it matters, it is also gluten free, dairy free, rich in fiber & potassium, and low in fat)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
