This was so good last year we just had to repeat it! However, we have made some minor modifications for the enjoyment of all.
For those who embrace the holiday season, this is a must hike. We are offering two hiking options that will both finish a magnificent holiday treat; the annual Pioneer Village Christmas Walk!
For those who have never attended Pioneer Village, it boasts a collection of cabins dating to the 19th century and the cabins will be open during this event for your enjoyment. The stories behind some of these cabins are amazing including one that was a safe house on the Underground Railroad.
About the Pioneer Village Candlelight Walk as posted on their website www.caesarscreekpioneervillage.org: "Celebrating Christmas in the early 1800s is different than it is today. Come see how we prepare for the holidays at the village. Tour the Village by candlelight and enjoy the hearth heated cider and hot chocolate. Dress warm!"
Option A (13 mile hike): We will meet at Pioneer Village off Oregonia Rd at 11:00 AM and walk the @13 mile yellow blaze trail, finishing back at Pioneer Village at around 4:30 PM to enjoy the festivities. We will go a slower pace this year so that we get to enjoy the wonderful lake views we get this time of year.
Option B (8 mile hike): Option B hikers will also meet at Pioneer Village but start at 1:30 PM for a 8 mile hike around the Wellman Meadows portion of the park.
Option C: Meet us at Pioneer Village for the festivities only. You will easily spot us with our hiking gear.
For those hiking, please know your capabilities and limitations. Option A is a difficult hike and should only be considered if you are a skilled hiker. Option B will be within close proximity of Pioneer Village and offers several options to return to your vehicle if needed. This hike takes place within deer hunting season so wear bright colors that stand out. We want to get everyone back to Pioneer Village prior to sun down as this when the hunters return to the park. We do encourage you to pack a headlamp or flashlight in case it is cloudy and gets dark earlier than expected. Also, pack water, snack food, proper winter gear and you may find poles useful particularly on the 13 miler.)
I would like to stress this is designed to be a fun hike and we had great reviews last year. Our secondary goal is to make this a fundraiser for this deserving not-for-profit organization. The cost to attend the Christmas Walk is $7 per person with all money going to maintaining the village. It will be assumed all that sign up for the hike plan to attend the Christmas Walk so we will have a representative from P.V. collecting the fees at the parking lot when you arrive. Please bring cash and note that the Christmas Walk event runs from 4 PM to 8PM.
