Buckeye Trail Winter Hike & Potluck Dinner

Dayton Hikers Winter Hike & Potluck Dinner

On The Buckeye Trail At Caesar Creek State Park

Sign at intersection of N. Clarksville and Middletown Road. Turn left here for the Hopewell Day Lodge.

What: Join the Dayton Hikers group for a winter hike on the Buckeye Trail and potluck dinner at Caesar Creek State Park. Thanks to our donating members we have reserved the Hopewell Day Lodge for the location for our winter hikes and potluck dinner.

Hikes: There will be several hikes to choose from ranging from 3.5 miles to 12 miles in length. Pick the hike that is best for you! Enjoy the beautiful winter scenery of Caesar Creek State Park and the Buckeye Trail. All hikes will use a portion of the Buckeye Trail for their route. The hikes will have varying start times. All hikes will end in time for the potluck dinner.

Buckeye Trail: For nearly 1,444 miles, the Buckeye Trail winds around Ohio, reaching into every corner of the state. From a beachhead on Lake Erie near Cleveland, to a hilltop overlooking the Ohio River in Cincinnati, a hiker can experience a little of all that Ohio has to offer. The Buckeye Trail follows wooded footpaths, country roads, within both rural and urban settings.

Hopewell Day Lodge: The perfect place for our winter hike and potluck dinner! It is located right on the blue blazes of the Buckeye Trail! The Hopewell Day Lodge is a beautiful and well equipped place. The lodge includes a kitchen, restrooms, picnic tables, and outside grills.  The Day Lodge is located on Middletown Road off of Clarksville Road. See map link below. The lodge is rented all day for our use. This is made possible because of the generosity of our Donating Members.

Potluck Dinner: Bring a dish to share! We will enjoy a hearty meal after a day of winter hiking. Bring a pot of chili, a crock pot dish, side dish, desert or food item to share with the group. Electric outlets, oven and refrigerator are available. Dinner will be served at 4:00pm.

Dress: Dress for the weather! Dress in layers.  Boots, hat, gloves, scarf, windbreak layer, and layers for upper and lower body. Wool, silk and synthetic fibers are best. Avoid cotton.

Hiking Gear: Bring appropriate winter hiking gear including trekking poles, gaiters, boot traction devices (YakTrax), day pack, snacks and water.

Bring: For the potluck dinner bring your own tableware. Bring a plate, bowl, spoon, fork, knife, napkins, etc.

Provided: Dayton Hikers will provide coffee, hot chocolate, tea and soft drinks.

Raffle: We will raffle off some cool swag from our sponsors and friends. Anyone who RSVP's yes is automatically entered in the drawing. The drawing will take place at 5:00pm. Winner must be present.

There is no charge for this event. But bring a dish to share. Donations accepted. You can bring one guest. Indicate this in your RSVP.

Melissa (Laurel's Daughter, writing for her): My mom went roller skating yesterday and fell & broke her leg. She is in the hospital right now, and had to have surgery on her leg. I canceled all of her hikes for this month for her, and she will let you know about her hiking retreats that are currently planned when she is out of the hospital.

Gosh. We are very sorry to hear this. Sending good thoughts her way. How long will she be in the hospital?

Weather Update: The Dayton Hikers Buckeye Trail Winter Hike will feel more like a spring hike than a winter hike. According to AccuWeather.com we can expect a high of 47 degrees with chances of rain of 40-50% in Wayneville. Please dress accordingly. I use AccuWeather.com because they tend to be more accurate with less hype. We all know how accurate the weatherman was last weekend with the snow forecast.

Would anyone like to lead a 3 mile, easy hike for this winter event It would start at 2:00pm and last 90 minutes. We need a hike leader for this hike. Looks for all the hikes to be posted in a day or two!

    December 4

    • Dawn

Sure Andy. Do you know the location to park for the 50 Springs Loop? That's a little over 3 miles.

      December 4

    • Andy N.

Great! Thank you! But for the winter hike you would meet at the Day Lodge first. Then car pool over to 50 Springs. I will list you as the hike leader.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
