It was a grey and cold day with temperature in the 20s. Fortunately there was very little wind. Hiking distance was approximately 5 miles. An enthusiastic group of 38 post New Years holiday hikers enjoyed getting out and enjoying the winter scenery. There was much discussion of the historic nature of the site, with the Wright Brothers having tested their early aircraft on Huffman Prairie. There was good comradery and good physical exercise along the trails.

This was my first hike with the group. Exactly what I was looking for; nice quick pace, friendly people. I am looking forward to many more in the future. Great work by all who planned it.

Yesterday I did the hike at Sycamore State Park.......without the boot traction devices. It was my first hike. I fell behind at times, with a fellow noobie, but we had a great time and worked up a good sweat! Will the conditions at Huffman be similar? I need to decide if I should get to a sporting goods shop before the hike, or just scrap it and go see the Hobbit!

I would assume the trail conditions at Huffman MetroPark are very similar to what you encountered at Sycamore State Park yesterday. Except that nobody will be shooting at or near you!

Just a friendly reminder that these every-other Sunday hikes at 1:30pm are *BRISK* pace hikes. The pace might be faster than you expect based on the hike description. Hikers can and do get left behind if they are unable to keep up. The trails are extremely icy and slippery due to recent weather conditions. Trekking poles and boot traction devices (Yaktrax) are most highly recommended. These every-other Sunday hikes at 1:30pm are unique as their primary focus is to provide a vigorous workout for the hiker. If you are new to hiking and/or have never hiked in icy/slippery conditions then this hike is probably not for you.

I have hiked in four MetroParks in the last four days. The trails are getting icier every day from foot traffic and the daily freeze/thaw cycle.

Never done a meet-up before. Anything a newbie needs to know before coming to this hike? Surely there is a secret handshake I will need to learn.

Seems I should look for you, as I too am a newbie

Glad there will be more than one newbie! Just discovered the "hiker guidelines" on this page so I feel a little more prepared. Looking at the photos helped too.
