Presenter: Preston Bartlett

Presentation Description: The Miami -Erie Canal was the reason for the birth of small towns all along the canal from the Ohio River to Lake Erie. Started in 1825 and finished in 1845, the canal provided opportunities for many people. The evenings presentation will focus on how the canal work and the impact it had from Cincinnati to through Middletown and Dayton to Lockington. Preston will answer those questions that we have such as: "How did the canal go across rivers and creeks?" "Were there different kinds of boats and if so what did they look like?" "How did a lock work?" "Where did all the water come from to feed the canal and the locks?" Come ready to ask questions and challenge Preston Bartlett, who will be giving his first talk on the Canal. Preston is a volunteer trail maintainer for the Buckeye Trail Association (BTA) and maintains a 3 mile section of trail with his brother.

Funny, I grew-up in Mercer Co. and now Dayton, but I know so very little about the canal system. Thanks, Preston for taking the time to share your broad knowledge. I look forward to rediscovering some of the canal.

Preston did a great job on this presentation of the area canal systems. Now I want to take a History hike along one of those towpaths. The map in the pamphlet will be a good reference for future adventures.
Not only am I enjoying hiking with this group, but these presentation events are an added bonus.

Fascinating and educational presentation. Preston's passion for the canals, Ohio history and the outdoors is evident. Hopefully I will be inspired to design a few hikes that will showcase what we learned. Missy did a great job organizing the food and making sure the meeting ran smooth. Very successful Meetup.

Looking forward to spending an evening talking about how our area was influenced by the canal. The more I research, the more I am amazed at how the Miami and Erie Canal was the focal point of communities and the growth of business and travel. An example is that Dayton grew from just under 3000 people in 1820 to over 10000 in 1850. Mostly because the canal offered opportunities for people to inprove their lives. What kind of questions do you have that you would want answered?

Preston, I know its late notice, but if you find something related to the commerce channels of the day I would find this most interesting. How did people communicate price and what was the system of currency and weights and measures? So, if I was a Miller in Germantown and I wanted to transport some of my product to a commerece hub, how would I get paid? What would I need to do? Do I send somone with the product to safeguard my interest? And so on...

Kenny, this is topic that I have not researched at all but something that seems interesting and worth spending time finding information on. I would love to talk with you at some point weds to see how to go forward with this topic.
