Day Hike - Caesar Creek Pioneer Village Christmas "Candlelight Walk"

For those who embrace the holiday season, this is a must hike. Not only is winter the second best hiking season (by my humble opinion), we get to finish the hike with a magnificent holiday treat.

For those who have never attended Pioneer Village, it boasts a collection of cabins dating to the 19th century and the cabins will be open during this event for your enjoyment. The stories behind some of these cabins are amazing including one that was a safe house on the Underground Railroad.

About the Pioneer Village Candlelight Walk as posted on their website www.caesarscreekpioneervillage.org: "Celebrating Christmas in the early 1800s is different than it is today. Come see how we prepare for the holidays at the village. Tour the Village by candlelight and enjoy the hearth heated cider and hot chocolate. Dress warm!"

We will offer three options for this event, please announce your intention when making your RSVP.

Option A: We will meet at Pioneer Village off Oregonia Rd at 11:30 AM and walk the @12 mile yellow blaze trail, finishing back at Pioneer Village at around 4:30 PM to enjoy the festivities.

Option B: **CHANGE IN MEETING SPOT for Option B hikers only**: Option B hikers should meet us at the Caesars Creek Visitors Center parking area (4020 N. Clarksville Rd., Waynesville) at 3:00 PM for the remaining 4 miles to Pioneer Village. We will shuttle you back to your vehicle immediately upon arriving at Pioneer Village. Please note the "Option A" group is hiking in from Pioneer Village and while we anticipate a 3 PM arrival we may be a few minutes behind schedule. Please enjoy the visitors center while you wait for us.

Option C: Meet us at Pioneer Village for the festivities only. You will easily spot us with our hiking gear.

(For those hiking, please pack a headlamp or flashlight in case it is cloudy and gets dark earlier than expected. Also, pack water, snack food, proper winter gear and you may find poles useful particularly on the 12 miler.)

Please note there is a $7 entry fee for the event but as this is a non-profit organization all money goes to maintaining the village. The Christmas Walk event runs from 4 to 8 PM.

If we do this again next year (and I hope we do), perhaps we can have a fast group that starts at 11:30, and a moderate group that starts at 10:30.

If anyone lost the mud basket off their trekking poles, please contact Buckeye. I found one during the hike and it looked like brand new and totally clean as if just dropped. I gave it to him to check with everybody back at the Pioneer village.

I checked with a few folks, but didn't have any takers. So hoping that someone contacts me for their missing basket!

Fun fast hike. Folks were a bit spread out, but I guess that's to be expected with such a large group. Kathie and I headed over to the Lebanon Carriage Parade and Festival afterwards. It was magical and amazing with 135 horse drawn carriages decked out in lights.

A great day in all ways, the hike, the trails, the people from a variety groups, the conversations, and the candlelight walk at Pioneer Village. Joel and Buckeye did an excellent job managing a large group of hikers, with precision timing (perfect 4:30 arrival time)! The pace was a good workout. Thanks for putting together a great December outing.

Thanks to all for supporting Pioneer Village! They were appreciative of your financial contributions and hope you share your experience with friends and family so they will visit someday. A special thank you to Path and Buckeye for co-hosting this event. And to the 41 hikers, thanks for your attendance and participation. We will be sure to put this event on the calendar next year!

What ? I am a bit disappointed that, as Plan B participants, we get to walk to Pioneer Village, but don't even get to enjoy the Village ?' we are shuttled back to our car ? What's the fun in that ?

Oh !!! Thank you !! that never occurred to me !! :-)

I just want to confirm Buckeye was correct. It is better to get people to their cars ASAP so we don't accidentally leave someone at the Village later that evening 4 miles from their car. Particularly in the dark with hunters.

Just a friendly reminder that gun deer hunting season is November 26 to December 2 and will be underway while this hike is going on. Hunting is allowed at parts of Caesar Creek State Park. So please consider wearing some blaze orange on this hike for safety.
