Volunteer Tire Clean Up - Part II
Join members of the Miami Valley Outdoor Club to finish a project begun in March. It involves clearing dozens of old tires from an existing trail through a lovely stretch of Dayton owned woods between Wegerzyn Garden Center and the Community Vegetable Gardens. Have fun rolling tires, while you help beautify a little known path in the vicinity of Jay Lake, creating a longer trail for hikers and walkers to enjoy.
UPDATE: In March 2012, 24 hardy volunteers helped roll out just over 300 tires from the stretch of woods, sometimes through 12 inches of water. The area is now dry! No standing water to contend with this time. And the hard work should warm up a chilly day. During a recent walk-through of the area, about 80 tires were counted - there could be as many as 100, but now much easier to find without all the undergrowth.
Families, youth groups, clubs, couples, singles, and all ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Water, hot drinks & snacks will be provided. Restroom available.
Plan to get dirty. Bring your own work gloves or they will be provided.
Follow the road past Wegerzyn Garden Center. Park at the Wingmasters flying field parking lot north of the lake. The clean-up is in the woods at the edge of the field beyond the Wingmasters facility. Additional parking at Jay Lake.

Sandy, thanks for the comment and thanks so much for coming the second time. It was definitely a peak experience for me Saturday although I was disappointed and felt guilty that I had to stay at the registration table and not haul tires. I was really looking forward to the fun and exercise of moving tires. But I was glad people seemed to have so much fun. Everyone stayed until the end!

It was so awesome to see so many people come out and volunteer their time on a Saturday afternoon. My muscles say owwwww but my spirit says wowwwww!

It couldn't have been a more perfect day. We hauled out over 150 tires (I counted after everyone left). One pile was so big I stopped counting at 100 because so many were hidden underneath. The other pile was definitely 49 tires. Everyone stayed until the end. They really seemed to enjoy it. They even had fun digging old tires that were buried in the ground, just dticking out part way. I tried to get volunteers to take a break for water and snacks and they said they were having too much fun to stop. Many, many thanks to everyone. Now we have a beautiful and clean woods to hike in.

Lots of fun and hard work. Removed a lot of tires - 100+ - and many were large and heavy. The area looks like a pristine ephemeral bog now.

Mark and everyone. The directions will be clearly marked with black arrows on hot pink signs starting at the entrance to Wegerzyn. You should not have a problem finding us. See you there!

Hey Lindy - When we get there, where do we check in at for this tire roll-a-thon?

Thanks to all of you who plan to come to the clean up Saturday. If possible, please come at the start time so I can go through the orientation for a bunch of you at once. But if you have to come late, please come anyway. Even if you just retrieve one tire, every little bit helps. I think it will be really fun. See you all there!

Another try - without typos.
In case any of you who were on this clean up in March and DID NOT find this bit of info buried in the announcement text, there is no standing water right now. The area is completely dry. Hope you can come, if the water issue was keeping you away.
ALSO - the weather report looks good so far. May be almost 60 degrees.

Does anyone have a pickup truck that they are willing to bring to the clean up? The tires are spread out over a wide area and a truck would be helpful to move some from one drop off point to a central location.
ALSO, if anyone would like to come but not get involved in the heavy lifting, we could use one person to sign people in and out, give directions, distribute refreshmts. A car will be parked at the check-in location for warmth, if it is a cold day.
