Indian Mound Reserve - Moderate Pace

Time for another hike with Mtn Laurel. We will be hiking a little over 4 miles through a beautiful gorge and will see a lovely waterfall.  There is an option to hike only 3 miles if you wish. Our pace will be about 2 to 2.5 mph on a mostly flat trail. There is a small Indian Mound you can climb. Wear your hiking boots and bring your camera for a fun hike.

Description of the park:

One of our most popular parks , Indian Mound Reserve is also one of the most diverse areas managed by the Greene County Park District.

A spectacular natural resource is created with a blend of the gorge, meadow, woods, river and marsh, creating an amazing view for quiet passersby.

Much Native American history can be learned here with the Pollock Works, a Hopewell structure, and the Williamson Mound, an Adena structure, both of which are hundreds of years old.

An 1800's cabin also sits on the park grounds. Originally, the log cabin was constructed in Selma, Ohio as part of a young ladies wedding dowry. It also played a role in the Underground Railroad and was probably an important part of the lives of slaves passing through Cedarville. The cabin is now in need of many renovations.

The park also offers an extraordinary wildflower display in early May featuring about 75 species, some of which are rare, including snow trillium.  It also boasts one of the largest groves of white arborvitae, a tree on Ohio's protected species list.

What a nice group! It was great meeting everyone. The park was beautiful, with an interesting history. It only drizzled the last half mile. Great hike!

It didn't rain between 2 pm and 4pm. After 4pm there was some light rain but everyone had a great time. It was great to get out of the house for some exercise with some nice people.

There is a chance of rain for Sunday but that may change. I hope I don't have to cancel the hike. I will wait and see what the weather man says tomorrow.

I really wanted to see the waterfall, but I don't want to hike in one. Just sayin'.

I am going. I can not think of anything that would stop me if I really want to go. I was in the infantry and we lived in all weather conditions.

Me too, hiking in the wet doesn't excite me. Have fun and hopefully catch up in the near future.

Sorry, the thunderstorms from 2-3 clinched it for me. I'm bailing out on this one. Hope we can go sometime in nicer weather.

I suggest everyone bring hiking sticks, wear gaiters if you have them, and bring extra shoes to change into after the hike because it is going to be muddy.

I would love to ride along with someone if you have room. Will chip in for gas, of course!

    Laurel,
As long as it doesn't rain I would like to bring a friend with me. I don't see how to add her +1. Does she have to belong to our group?

    December 1

    • Mountain Laurel

No she doesn't need to belong. I will add her for you.

I will email everyone my cell number on Sunday to aid you in finding the correct parking spot. If you don't see my Pruis in the parking lot when you arrive just call me.

Fyi, The last time I was there, the log cabin was gone. I don't know if it is being moved or rebuilt.

    • Mountain Laurel

Gone oh no! this is going to make it harder for everyone to find the parking lot.

      November 25

    • Claudia

Maybe you could meet at the main parking lot nearest Cedarville,by the waterfall. The parking lot is right by the street which may be easier to find.
