Vegetarians are still are very small minority in the American population, so it really helps to be around others who share my interests in the vegetarian lifestyle, particularly in the meat-and-potatoes part of the country called "Central Illinois." By participating in a vegetarian meetup, we can also influence local restaurants to cater more to our food choices. This Meetup is an offshoot of the Decatur Vegetarian Society, a group which has been meeting and eating for over 5 years. Amanda Young and I are co-directors of that group. We hope that this Meetup group attracts more Central Illinois people interested in vegetarianism to help spread the message of this ethical, environmentally friendly, and healthy lifestyle.
I was tossed into vegetarianism in the late 1970's but it didn't stick. I returned to it in the early '90's and became a lacto-ovo vegetarian. By 2006, for ethical reasons, I adopted a vegan lifestyle and swore off all animal products forever.
Fantastic! Having a group like this opens doors in local establishments.
