Let's discuss "Annabel" by Kathleen Winter

Kathleen Winter’s luminous debut novel is a deeply affecting portrait of life in an enchanting seaside town and the trials of growing up unique in a restrictive environment.

In 1968, into the devastating, spare atmosphere of the remote coastal town of Labrador, Canada, a child is born: a baby who appears to be neither fully boy nor fully girl, but both at once. Only three people are privy to the secret: the baby’s parents, Jacinta and Treadway, and a trusted neighbor and midwife, Thomasina. Though Treadway makes the difficult decision to raise the child as a boy named Wayne, the women continue to quietly nurture the boy’s female side. And as Wayne grows into adulthood within the hyper-masculine hunting society of his father, his shadow-self, a girl he thinks of as "Annabel," is never entirely extinguished.

Kathleen Winter has crafted a literary gem about the urge to unveil mysterious truth in a culture that shuns contradiction, and the body’s insistence on coming home. A daringly unusual debut full of unforgettable beauty, Annabel introduces a remarkable new voice to American readers.

Noodle is good. Saba in Oakhurst Village has vegan options. I believe Wahoo! does as well.

Would love some recommendations on where to eat out around here! We've found Raging Burrito, Revolution Doughnuts, and Square Pub so far. Want to try Noodle. :)

Hello. Not sure how to send personal messages... I'm new and this would be my first time but I cannot make it. I had to go away for a family emergency and just got back; will be leaving again tomorrow for a business trip so strapped for time. Also, I unfortunately had no time to read the book this week either. I do apologize. Thanks...next time.

If not noted before, this goes for everyone on the wait list for this book or any book in the future. We'll always make room for someone who wants to come to a meeting and be part of the fun.

I know there's not a spot open for this Sunday's meeting. Would it still be possible to attend and pay my fee just to have a chance to meet with you ladies? I've been out here from CA since July and haven't got to meet anyone. Would sure like to start making some friends, this lonely girl from Menifee. Please let me know if that would be all right. Thank you!

Hope you all had fun yesterday!! I'm in Reno right now, watching the migration from Burning Man. Wow! Can't wait for the discussion on Sunday-- just finished. It was.... Mind-expanding.

Yes, it probably is a caribou since they talk so much about caribou in the book - I don't think that's a spoiler, but if it is I apologize.

This is trivial, but did anyone else read the book and it had a different cover from what's displaying (as in a person instead of a deer)? I'm sure it's the same book but I'd hate to have read the wrong book for many reasons.

I got a copy from the library and it has a photo of a boy

Yes, I also found the cover picture with the boy but he kinda freaked me out and I didn't want him to stare at me for one long month so I opted for the peaceful deer (which may or may not be a caribou) :)
