When policy and reality collide!

We're going to try something a little different this time. Instead of breakfast, we'll have an early dinner. And to avoid any deficits on the food bill, Philippe's is self-serve, so everyone pays for their own food before sitting (cash only - no credit cards!). And we depart the west side in favor of somewhere closer to the Valley and points east. BTW, the Dodgers are playing at Milwaukee this date. The topic is this: Why is it that so much policy in this country is in direct contradiction to the facts? A few notable examples are the Drug War, abstinence-only sex education, farm subsidies, the death penalty, campaign finance, and gun control. Let's discuss these and other (preferably more conservative) cases. While these examples are good topics in and of themselves, I am more interested in why the U.S. tolerates this decidedly illogical stance in so many situations. As always, please RSVP "Yes' only if you are definitely attending. Since we'll have a private room, it's imperative that I have an accurate head count. Also, food is recommended but not required, so don't feel obliged to order anything. Parking is free and easy. You can also get to the restaurant by rail - just head for Union Station. Finally, if you haven't been to this Los Angeles icon before, it is a real piece of history. And a cup of coffee is only a dime! I hope to see you all! Todd Koerner

I loved the discussion and learned a lot from the people there. I would love to attend again. Thank you for providing this opportunity. The topic worked well thanks to the moderator who kept things on a general level. At some point some guidelines should be written up for moderating after we've discovered what works best.
