Announcing a new Meetup for Deep Thinkers! What
: Saturday, August 7,[masked]:30 AMWhere
: Dinah's Family Restaurant
6521 S Sepulveda Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90045
How often do you drive an extra mile to get two cents off per gallon, but think nothing of tipping a valet two bucks instead of one? By my calculation, that one extra dollar is comparable to five cents off per gallon for a 20-gallon tank. So how rational is one versus the other?
I was struck by how proportionality seems to affect people differently the other day when I saw the LA Times with a headline about Bell city officials receiving $500,000 per year, while the Pentagon lost $9 billion in Iraq. Again, by my calculation, you could pay a Bell official for 18,000 years with that $9 billion. Or put another way, you could pay each of Bell's 38,000 residents a lump sum of $237,000.
So, for this Meetup, let's talk about numbers and their relative size, how we assign value to those numbers, and how that affects our decisions. Come prepared with whatever numbers intrigue you - the size of the universe, the age of the planet, the size of the nucleus relative to the electron, etc.
How to make sense of it all? That's a job for Deep Thinkers!
We're heading back to Dinah's because of its central location, large size and yummy menu. Join us!
