Weekend in Washington DC - Too Late To Sign Up

  • April 5, 2013 · 10:30 PM

Join us for a 3-day weekend in Washington DC during the most beautiful time of the year and enjoy the cherry blossoms and beautiful spring weather.  Anybody who can't get Fri off from work can meet us there on Sat.

Found a great deal staying at the Hyat House in Fairfax, VA.  There is a complmentary breakfast buffet.  The hotel is a short walk to the Metro to take into DC and a shorter walk to a few restaurants offering happy hours.  The single rate is $99 per night. Double occupancy will be under $60 per person and triple occupancy wll be under $40 per person.  These rates include an AARP discount and tax.

Amanda and I will be driving and each passenger paying the driver $25.  Parking at the hotel is free and it is not a good idea to drive into DC.  The driver will just be responsible for tolls and gas.

If anybody hasn't signed up but decides to join us at the last minute, let me know and I'll contact the hotel to see if any more rooms are available.

Roger just RSVP'd. I emailed him and will tell anybody else who wants to go - you will need to go to HyattHouseFallsChurch.com and see if you can still get a room. You can't just RSVP that you're coming this late. If you can get a room, then RSVP.

it might be a wash money wise, crystal city hotel is $30 cheaper but don't know what they charge for parking, i think doubletrees have complimentary breakfast. gallows road is not the best to walk to metro station, does hyatt have a shuttle (lived in fairfax for 10 years)

    February 24, 2013

    • Patty B.

The Hyatt House is in a retail complex. There are a few restaurants with happy hours right there and it's only a 1/2 block from the metro. It looks like a very nice hotel.

If you take the train, Metro station (Red Line) is right in Union Station so transportation shouldnt be an issue. Train is a bit pricey for some but its the best way to get to and from DC most of the time. If you charter your own bus, as was noted, has insane costs. Also as noted, Crystal City is much easier, much nicer places with access to Metro system, plus its closer to Old Towne if thats another option for sight-seeing. Getting to Great Falls could be a challenge but not impossible considering its not on any public transportation system, might want to rethink that one.

I work in DC everyday and have been in the area for the last 12 years, was assigned to Ft Belvior back in the 80's... getting around hasnt changed much, just has gotten better. Services like Zipcar and Cars2Go are the way I get to places not serviced by Metro.

    Enjoy!

    February 24, 2013

    • Patty B.

Anthony, we're planning on driving. Getting to Great Falls will be easy. Plans were made over a month ago. I put many hours into planning this trip. The hotels I checked in Crystal City didn't offer free parking or free breakfast.

Was just reading post and comments and was lending some insight from someone who deals with the place everyday (who's name is Carper, Coons or Carney). Was considering joining the group but the weekend is full for me. As I said before, enjoy.

I'm interested in a day trip by bus if anyone else is. Also I'd love to go to NYC for the day. Art museums are my thing. The bus could drop us off and we could spend the day as we please.

Patty...wasn't Gray Hound cheaper bus than MegaBus?

    February 4, 2013

  • Patty B.

Greyhound is cheaper than MegaBus - $47.00 round trip. Have another idea to save money. Volunteers can drive - 4 to a car. The people who don't drive can pay the driver $20 each to cover gas and tolls. If some people don't want to join the group until Sat they can organize their own carpool. It's cheaper than the bus and we can drive directly to the hotel instead of ending up at Union Station.

Judy, Im from NY (Brooklyn) but I would definately go for a day trip. I know the subway system as well as the locations of the museums. Bring your sneakers as we'll do plenty of walking. When were you thinking of going? Correspond with me via my personal e-mail.

    January 29, 2013

  • Patty B.

Will investigate the MegaBus. It also depends on where they drop you off in DC. We'd have to add in the cost of getting from where they drop us off to where we're staying.

    January 29, 2013

  • Jay B.

I saw this ad Article in Time, talking about MegaBus. I googled and it says you can catch the bus in Newark to DC for $2. round trip. i don't know what the catch is. Anyone have any experience with MegaBus?

Never expected such great response. I'm looking into chartering a bus. It might be cheaper than a train, Greyound bus or taking several cars. I've found a hotel in Arlington, VA that is a 4-min walk to the subway (much cheaper than staying in DC) that would cost about $55 per night per person double occupancy or $40 per night per person triple occupancy. I've asked Veronica to see if she can find a better deal.

There's a big enough group that we don't all have to do the same things. Veronica wants to go on a White House tour. I've done that twice and have no interest going again. I'm sure most of us will want to spend some time on the mall seeing all the monuments and some will enjoy going to the museums while others would prefer to do something else. I'll see what's going on at Kennedy Center & Ford's Theatret.

Pleae respond with your prference of going on Fri 4/5 and staying 2 nights or on Sat 4/6 and staying 1 night.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
