Centralia, PA

See what's left of the town that's on fire beneath its streets! You can find details on Centralia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centralia,_Pennsylvania

We'll take one of the best driving roads in PA to get there- PA 125. See this article for a description and some pics: http://www.pa-mag.com/2009/10/0...

Meet in Pine Grove, PA at Buddy's Log Cabin, 8:00 AM for breakfast or 10:00 AM for just the drive, then drive Gold Mine Rd and PA 125 over the mountain to Shamokin, PA for a layover at the Turkey Hill convenience store for gas, snacks, bathrooms, etc. before heading to Centralia.

Expect to spend about an hour in the twisties on the way to Shamokin and another half hour to get to Centralia. There are no services, or really anything resembling civilization, left in Centralia, but Mt Carmel right down PA 61 has gas, food, etc. Also, Centralia isn't far from I-81 for those looking to make time on their way home.

Here's the route from Buddy's to Shamokin to Centralia: http://goo.gl/maps/GBLQb

Rt 125 is equal parts scenic and challenging. Coming down the mountain on the Shamokin side there are some serious downhill hairpins that you need to pay attention to, so stay within your limits and pay attention to the road! On a nice day there may be some amount of sport bike traffic, so watch out for our two wheeled friends and be aware that they will be looking to pass (no matter how quick you may be going :-)). Bottom line, pay attention to the road and your surroundings and everyone will have a great day!

Yes, there are still some good roads near New Hope. The Van Sant Airport is a good meeting point.

I used to enjoy the ride down 611 and 32 to New Hope ~ but I'm not sure how that's fared with flooding. It's been quite a few years since I've taken that road. Also need a good starting point. The ride all the way from Easton isn't bad, although we'd usually aim our way through Hellertown ~ it misses out on some nice bits just south of Easton (a negative), but it misses out on Easton itself (which is a plus).

I have a few more suggestions for routes- a couple around Shippensburg and one by Chadds Ford if we want to try for some more this fall.

Great drive, great day. It was good to meet John, Dave, Pete, and Eric. I had a blast, and I believe everyone else did too. It's great to see such an assortment of fun to drive cars. Maybe we can get one ot two more in before the end of the year.

    September 24, 2012

  • Dave Barker

Everett, add Gold Mine Rd to the original route. It's a bit West of Pine Grove and its worth driving 10 minutes to start there and then pick up 125 from 209 instead of taking it right out of Pine Grove.

I kept the route map you guys used ~ really wanted to make that drive! I figure I'll try it at some point in the near future, when other factors cooperate. Won't be as much fun as it would be in a group, but it will be better than nothing!

  • Dave Barker

Good to meet you all! It was a great day! I could drive Gold Mine Rd and Rt 125 back and forth all day long. Thanks for coming out to play!

This was an awesome drive! For challenge & excitement, I'd rate PA125 among the top 5 roads I've driven to date - the RX7 got a good day of exercise. Centralia was pretty cool too, and we got to talk to one of the 5 residents who still lives there and witnessed smoke coming out of the ground. Kudos to Mike for starting this club, and Dave for planning out the route!

I'm here at Buddy's having breakfast. I'm the guy with the olive drab Sakura Motor Oil shirt and faded red Schooner Sultana baseball cap.

  • John

Hopefully the rain will hold off till we can get through. I'll be in my white 06' Mustang. See you guys there.

    September 22, 2012

  • Dave Barker

Last minute updates: I may be closer to 9 than 8 if anybody else is coming for breakfast. There's a good chance of rain, so plan accordingly. My buddy Erik is coming along, but doesn't want the MGB to see rain, so should be shotgun with me. I'll have some map printouts for those who show. See you all in the AM!

I'm not ruling myself out on this, but it's not definite enough to even put a conditional 'yes' response... If I'm able to make it, I will be driving the Atlantic Blue Pearl 2005 LGT in my icon!

    September 19, 2012

  • Dave Barker

I'll be in my Deep Blue Pearl 2008 VW R32.

    September 15, 2012

  • Pete

I'll be driving the black '89 Mazda RX7 Turbo in my picture. Unless it breaks or the weather turns very wet & sloppy. Then I'll be in my '03 Protege5 daily driver.

Hey everyone, I'm looking forward to Sat. the 22nd for the run to Centralia. I'll be in my Genesis Coupe. Would everyone who is going please respond with what they'll be driving - subject to change, of course. It will help put the name and car together for everyone. Our first drive! It's not too late to rsvp yes if you're on the fence.

    September 14, 2012

  • Dave Barker

Thanks, Mike. It'll be good to have you along!

Thank you Dave for putting this together. I know that it takes time and effort to plan a trip. Don't be shy people. Step up and plan other drives. Pick a date, suggest a route that you like, and post it.

I updated the main post with the summary of everything we've discussed so far. I'm looking forward to meeting you guys and having a great day driving around central PA with like minded individuals!

    August 5, 2012

  • Pete

I'm still in, and thanks for keeping this on Sat!

  • Beth

Okay, it's officially in my phone calendar. Looking forward to it!

    August 4, 2012

  • Dave Barker

Great! I'll probably grab breakfast at Buddy's and wait for you guys. It's Sat for sure- there's football Sunday.

    August 4, 2012

  • Beth

Ok, 10:00, I could handle! And I'll grab something to eat on the ride to the meeting spot (and my mega coffee, too.) Thanks for the time adjustment :) Oh, and has it been decided yet whether it's Saturday or Sunday? Either one works for me.

    August 4, 2012

  • Dave Barker

I'm game to meet a bit later if that allows more to get in on the fun. Are you figuring on eating beforehand and just meeting at Buddy's?

    August 3, 2012

  • Pete

I have a 2 hour drive to get there too, and the RX7 lacks cup holders for that mega cup of coffee I'll need - not good. Maybe we can start the meet at Buddy's Log Cabin an hour or two later, say 1000?

    August 3, 2012

  • Beth

I hate to be Debbie Downer, but I won't be making this one. I'd have to leave my house before 6 a.m. to make it, and that's just too painful a proposition on a weekend when I get up at 5:30 all week long for work. Sorry :( I'll think about a run to suggest that's a little closer to home (and probably still with a 9 a.m. start time .) :p Be sure to post pics! Centralia is definitely a cool spot to visit.

Dave - Sept 22 works for me.
Beth - LOL, I had a feeling you would say that about your '8. I drove a friend's RX8 once, and the handling is about as good as it can get. You should make the trip out to the Deals Gap Rotary Rally next year - best & biggest rotorhead gathering in the eastern US, you'll have a blast. BTW, nice donuts - I didn't know a stock RX8 could smoke tires like that!

    July 30, 2012

    • Beth

Thanks, Pete... those donuts are my favorite stress relief medication :) And my 8 is completely stock performance-wise. the only upgrade being the Mazdaspeed exhaust. I'll make a note about the rotary rally, sounds cool!

Oh and I missed Gerald's comment about only being able to make Sundays. Do we want to try for the 23rd instead?

FYI, here's some more info & pictures on PA 125. The comments about Gold Mine Rd have me interested as I haven't driven that before. http://www.pa-mag.com/2009/10/0...

OK, let's see if we can make 9/22 stick...I look open right now

  • Beth

I loveLoveLOVE my 8! I used to say if it was a man I'd marry it, but people always roll their eyes at me when I say that. lol I had it on the track up in Englishtown, and I have a little clip on YouTube from another day -- search Stenobeth and you can see it. :) Jeremy Clarkson loves the 8, too. Pete, you know what I'm talking about with that hot 7 you've got. Dave, if you drive an 8, I bet you'll love it, too. We're going to make an impressive bunch on our drive up to Centralia.

    July 29, 2012

  • Dave Barker

RX-8, huh? I've been thinking about trading the R32 on one.

    July 29, 2012

  • Pete

Hi Beth, nice to know I'm not the only rotor head here! How do you like your RX-8?

    July 29, 2012

  • Beth

Hey Pete!! A fellow rotor head!! :)

    July 29, 2012

  • Beth

So maybe Sept. 22 will work out.

    July 29, 2012

  • Pete

The only dates that don't work for me are Sept 29-30. Looking forward to this.

    July 29, 2012

  • Dave Barker

I'm thinking about a weekend in September at this point. Hopefully it will be a little cooler. I have a couple of friend who are not on Meetup that may be in for the drive as well. I'd like to keep it relatively small (<10 cars). Seeing as how things are going that shouldn't be an issue.

    July 29, 2012

  • Beth

I did this about a year ago after hearing about Centralia forever. It was creepy/cool. I'd love to do it again.

    July 29, 2012

  • Dave Barker

Pete, it's about 25 minutes to Centrailia from Shamokin and Shamokin is about 45 minutes from Pine Grove.

    July 22, 2012

  • Pete

This looks very interesting. Depending the date chosen, I'm in. Buddy's cabin is a 2 hour drive from home for me, but from what I read, the run on PA-125 between Pine Grove and Shamokin & back will be worth it - sort of like running the Tail of the Dragon without the 11 hour roadtrip to get there! How far off the PA-125 run is the excursion to Centralia?

    July 22, 2012

  • Dave Barker

I used to do this run with some of my motorcycle buddies. It works equally well with 4 wheels. 125 is one of the best roads in PA. It's a great day trip!
