  • Meet at the park office
  • Join Park Volunteer, Arlene Oley and Park naturalist, Stephanie Fox, as they lead a dusk walk into the Mapleton Preserve in Kingston to search out the sights and sounds of the Woodcock. This unique looking bird provides a fanciful flight and sound display that will delight all that attend. Depending on the weather, the group should also hear the chirps and peeps of frogs and toads from the surrounding area. The program will begin at 6:30 pm. Participants are asked to meet at the D & R Canal Kingston Office located at 145 Mapleton Road (.2 miles from Rt. 27/Main Street in Kingston). Please bring a flashlight for the walk back to the cars.

As much as I am sad for everyone that this is canceled, I am glad that I may get another shot to attend.

Do you think it will be cancelled since it was so cold today? Will the birds be active?

    March 13, 2014

  • Ingrid

I have to work out of town tomorrow & won't be back in time. As a novice bird watcher, I was really looking forward to this outing.

Wow, I moved up from the waiting list. Really looking forward to this, but I thought it was originally scheduled for the 7th. Would binoculars help?

    March 12, 2014

    • Elisabeth

It was, but the weather was so cold, the birds would not have been out to perform their mating dance/flight.

Hi Karen, No need to bring binoculars, but bring along a flashlight.

I wonder why there is a wait list. I am sure the birds wouldn't mind extra 30 people watching them mate :) I work literally 5 minutes away, would really hate to miss it.

How long is the woodcock mating season? Just wondering since the ground is still so flooded and muddy.

I know...I am not sure hw the wit list works..my first meetup....so I know two people dropped out..how do I know if I can attend?

    • Libbie C.

Well, I was on the Waiting List, and I got an email when someone cancelled, letting me know that I was now on the list - so I think it either happens automatically, or the list admins take care of it.

It seems as though people drop out via post but forget to remove their reservation, thus wait list people do not move in or know there are addional spots. How is this coordinated?

I am sorry, but I will not be able to make it tomorrow. Have a great time!

I apologize for this, but I need to cancel my participation and spot in the Woodcock walk. I hope someone else enjoys the walk in my place and that you will schedule it again sometime soon.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
