Re: [atheists-662] Living With Guns

I don't know that I have 100% clearly defined my opinion on guns...  It's tough for me because I say to people, if you don't like abortion...  Don't have one. If you don't like interracial/GLBT/non-"traditional" marriage...  Don't have one. So as much as I dislike guns, PART of me tells myself, if you don't like guns, don't have them. We can go on to say that abortions kill foetuses, not fully developed people. We can say that non-traditional marriages don't harm people. True, true.  What about alcohol? Millions of people have died from drinking and driving, or from someone else drinking and driving...  And subsequently killing innocent people. A properly trained gun owner can incapacitate an intruder without killing them. Please note: properly trained.  We go back to the DMV and some people are randomly plucked to be given driving tests again. A car is a deadly weapon, just as a gun is.  It seems to me that ALL gun owners should be required to update their licences and have all their guns inspected. They should be required to attend refresher trainings. If they don't attend, their gun licence should be revoked and guns confiscated. There should be a limit of how many guns someone can own. The types of guns citizens can own should be a LOT more limited.  Nobody needs a semi-automatic to guard their home.

TL;DR version...  I don't want rights taken from me, so why is it okay for me to try and take rights from someone else? MUCH better regulations are the first step. There has to be a happy medium.

Remove all the BS references to the constitution, and personal rights, and you begin to see the truth. It's a hobby, not an inborn right. The NRA is nothing more than a political organization protecting its own interests without regard for the consequences, even when that is the death of children. And homes are far more dangerous with a firearm present, than without. As Archie would say - case closed.
